Reet, Clio flunked its MOT today in reasonable style. £400+ repair, only cost me £300.

What do I expect from Mr Scrapman? I hear some people saying £150 weigh in, is that realistic?

Anyone done this before, and even more helpfully, done in Hampshire?

Thanks all...

Think its roughly £100 per ton, maybe a little less.

Old school trick was to absolutley drench the seats in water to add wieght. Probably caught on to that ages ago though.

sometimes you have to pay to scrap a car these days
as the scrap yard has to drain all oils separate and dispose of them
same with battery's then if there no parts on the car that they can sell the scrap value is less than the recycle costs

cost me £20 to have an old banger I'd got for parts to be taken away by the scrappy

I got £30 for a Volvo 240 with 1 remaining seat a few years back. I was expecting zero. 150 quid seems optimistic to me.

To run a car into a recycling center you need to be a registered scrap metal merchant.

Current price for an end of life vehicle at the company I work for here in sunny Norwich is £95 per tonne for an un-depoluted vehicle.

You will probably need to take the V5, and also perhaps your photocard drivers license for ID. Don't know how it works in your area, but it's how we do it here.

I also can't stress enough how much you must make sure they provide you with a certificate of destruction. Any licensed ELV disposal centre can and SHOULD provide you with this. This will cover your backside in any eventuality should the DVLA try and bend you over and shaft you mercelessly for things once the car is out of your possesion.

Try and find a metal processors rather than a conventional scrapyard/dismantlers.
Locally to Stafford If you take a car into a scrapyard they give you approx. £50 then Sell the parts and then take whats left to the processors.

If it has to be collected they charge you or pay you less for the car, depends how much they want it.

If you take the car in yourself, as said it's £100 per ton, An escort I took recently was worth £122. A lighter clio will be worth less. Take the V5 and some ID.

Hi

You need an end of life certificate. Without that the DVLA will not accept that it is no longer on the road and will force you to declare SORN on it every year (netting them a nice profit far in excess of anything you might get for its scrap value).

All the best

Keith

I also think it would be more worth your while to at least try so sell some parts. Recycling a complete vehicle is a real waste, the places round me crush the lot even if there are useable parts in there, so if I were you put adds up on ebay, gumtree, maybe some clio owners clubs if such a thing exists ? to say youre breaking it and if anyone needs any parts they can get in touch, then scrap whats left

Alternatively, sell it as a spares/repairs project, depending on the extent of the issues with the projects loads of people would probably give you £50 or so for it if they can do the work themselves and use it as a runabout? Heck i need a rough old car to learn to drive in and am used to working on cars so id probably buy it off you if the chassis wasnt on the verge of snapping in half from rust!
But a quick ebay search suggests that if youd be able to just get the engine out and sell that you could make more than scrap value

Good luck!

You could also try taking it to the local college if they have an automotive department. I know that they buy in cars that have failed there MOT so it is something that the pupils can learn stuff on.

We got £160 for our old Ka. Loads of scrap firms offer this amount and they even collected too.

No you don't, there's no reason a member of the public cannot take any scrap to the scrapyrd. You need to be registered if you do it commercially.

But only a car scrap yard with the right accreditation can give you the certificate of destruction so that (following a recent change to the rules) the DVLA will stop it being registered to you. Without that you will be stuck with having to SORN every year from now to eternity (and being fined when you forget).

All the best

How recent is this as up to about 2 months ago I was ticking the scrapped box and sending it to them and have never had problems?

Worst case scenario, declare it exported?

Hi

It is within the last couple of months. DVLA saying that they will no longer accept people just declaring them scrapped. Their excuse was that it was to stop people scrapping them on the cheap and dumping the non profitable bits (tyres, seats, etc).

From this page:-

If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either continue to tax it or tell the DVLA that you are keeping it off the public road. You can do this by making a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification). You will need to make a SORN every year until you have taken it to an ATF, or told DVLA that you longer have it.

Only get out appears to be to have passed it on to someone else. Bet there will be a lot of cars sold to John Smith

All the best

Keith
