It take it the Honda CB500 and CB500S are exactly the same bike just one is half-faired the other one isn't?

I understand they are interchangeable as well? So a CB500S can become a CB500 by removing the fairing and a CB500 can become a CB500S by simply adding the fairing?

yes same bike basically

Its not as simple as changing the fairing to a non faired bike and vice versa. Theres fairing brackets, speedo is different and host of other parts etc. Its not as simple as you think!

Probably easier to stick one of those massive harley type bar mounted fairings on it.

However my NTV came with a fairing, removing it required removing the plastics obviously then loads of brackets and steel tubes used to support it. Then hacking out a couple of relays to change it to a single headlamp. Then taking out spacers for where the speedo had been mounted onto the fairing.

There is also a CB500SS, hens teeth though...

Hi I found a forum elsewhere (as usual I can't find it again).

On that forum a mechanic guy was saying that they were exactly the same bike, that for the CB500S there was just extra fairing and brackets and all the screws and bolts that hold the fairing on etc.

The guy writing the thread wanted to make a CB500 into a CB500s

He was also told that it's not as simple as most people think. First time I've heard the speedo is different though? Are you sure?

Ah it is different. Just had a look at a parts manual.

Would it look horrendous if you took of the fairing off the CB500S?

Changing the speedo would be a fairly annoying thing just to get it to look like a CB500... Anyway.

As with most things it is possible, but why would you want to? If you want an unfaired bike buy an unfaired bike Confused

Well because I'd like the unfaired bike but I've found a really great deal on a CB500S. Also I'd like to keep the fairing on during the winter and take it of in the summer.

They're identical. Just the fairing, and clocks and iirc the loom connectors are the same.

the fairings would get wrecked in winter, as for changing over and changing back again and so on it would just be a nightmare and loads of hassle. why bother? If you were doing that you would have to change the clocks to suit as well.

You must be mad

Yeah, cos Honda used that crappy snow soluable plastic for the fairings Confused

Honestly it wouldn't be a big deal to make the 500s into the 500 (much easier than the other way round) half an hour would get all the plastic and bracketry off, then another half hour to put on a standard clockset and light. to buy the original honda headlight/bracket and clocks would probably come in at £50 each if your patient on ebay. using universal brackets, any old headlight and a bicycle speedo would cost around a quarter that.

Well I'm not a great fan of the fairing anyway, so they can happily get ruined. It's more to protect myself from arctic winds! I like the CB500 much more than the CB500s, just I've found one near me for a good price. Was hoping to strip and make it into a CB500 in the summer.

Maybe I am mad?

I have a CB500S. The fairing isn't very good at keeping the wind off in standard trim, although it would probably be ok with a flip up screen. If you want a naked CB500 with a detachable screen, then buy a naked CB500 and buy a detachable screen.

Good evening everybody,

I just found this discussion on google and registered to the BCF. I'm from Germany; please be patient as my english is just okay but not perfect.

I've got, beside a '90 BMW K100RS 4V, a '01 Honda CB500S which I just bought. Its predecessor was a '97 CB500, and I am a member of the www.cb-500.de board and their wiki.

The "S" is different in many ways, so an up- or downgrade is not a piece of cake. The details are shown at https://www.cb500-wiki.de/doku.php?id=cb500:modellvarianten_und_fahrgestellnummern (scroll down for the pictures)

First of all, the fairing is fitted to the frame. This fairing won't fit to a standard frame. Second, the fork braces are different. The CB500 instruments are fitted to the braces, the CB500S instruments are fitted to the fairing. The steering lock is different, and the mirrors are mounted at different places to avoid contact to the fairing.

There are some fairings that will fit, i.e. the Five Stars fairing that looks similar to the "S" type. But to retrofit a "S" fairing is nearly impossible.

By the way: the fuel consumption of my "S" is lower (3,99 iso 4,3 litres/100km) and the top speed is higher (around 190-200 kph iso 170-180). But the naked one is prettier in my opinion Laughing

Regards from Germany,
Michael

Bitte! Very Happy

By the way, did you know that the french MOTO REVUE rode more than 330,000 kilometres with a CB500 without major damages?
https://www.motorevue.com/site/-300-000-km-en-honda-cb-500-21218.html

Brave little twin Thumbs Up

This is my latest bargain:
https://www.cb-500.de/gallery/image.php?album_id=41&image_id=735&view=no_count
It has only 15,200 km on the clock but was sold for only 950 Euro due to only two minor damages (footrest plate and rear mud guard) after it was dropped by a car in a parking lot. I bought it immediately on the phone although the seller lives 650km from my home town. It was delivered by a conveyance some days later and looks like new. The damaged parts were replaced by used parts and there is not a single scratch left.

Here in Germany, these bikes are normally sold for about twice as much when in a good condition.
