Should i get a 33bhp bike or a big bike and restrict it?

Thinking about what to do when I pass my A2. Should I just get something small like a ninja 250 or get something big and much nicer like a 600 and restrict it? Also what would happen if I used it if it wasnt restricted and got found out by the police? Would I get points, a ban or the bike seized?

If you're going to be tempted, I'd say buy a ninja so you can't. IMO, the penalties are too severe (charges of riding without a licence, without insurance, for a start) - they would sod up too much of my life. However, seems very few people do get caught....

The Ninja was too small for me anyway, so I had to go bigger - glad I did - feels like you still get a lot of the torque from my 650, it runs 100% fine up to maybe 90mph and I'm not going to be faster than that anyway Then I'll probably keep the same bike for a while once I take the restrictors out as I'm hoping it'll feel like a different bike, and for little or no extra cost

Personally I would have a think about how long you want the bike for. If you are looking for a bike to last a couple of years only and are planning to keep changing bikes like so many people tend to do then I would go for the ninja 250. In a couple of years when the restriction is over you are going to want a different bike anyway.

If, however, your one of the few that are looking for a long term relationship with a bike then I would find one you can see yourself on for years and restrict it. You will have more than enough power on any machine restricted to 33 and then when you remove the restrictions then you'll have all that extra power to play with.

Removing a restriction is always a grey area with bikers. Yes its true its rarely checked up on but..... and its that but. You have an accident and the insurance wont pay out. You get caught you're looking at all kinds of licence problems. Technically you will have been riding a bike that you have no license to ride. The police can sieze the bike for that, points on the license and a fine. The points on the license can mean all kinds of problems getting insurance for the next 5 years or so.

33bhp on a bike would work out at between 80 and 100mph depending on bikes. That little 250 ninja is good for 100 and considering the speed limit on the fastest road is 70 you'll always have enough power and in comparison to a 125 it is plenty powerful enough.

In 2wks 2days my restriction period is over. For 19months i've been very happy with my CB250RSA. <33bhp has been plenty enough for an inexperienced rider like myself. And being able to use all(most) of the bikes potential has been perfect for me.
That 250 has given me good grounding for the 80bhp i now ride. (restrictrictors must of fallen out whilst doing that wheelie officer...)

New riders sometimes fall off. Bear this in mind whatever you choose.

I've got a Hyosung Comet GT 250 and I find it great for the commuting run I do and it's fast enough up to 70 and light enough to make most roads a blast. Only paid £600 for it on a 06 plate off the bay so there are bargains to be had and it's got a nice V-twin growl

Or get a GTR if you fancy a faired Ninja beating version
