I've had an Acumen immobiliser fitted, and the fobs are shite.

Either that or I'm a retard. Has anyone had one of these. i dont know the exact model, But its an Acumen cat1 Thatcham alarm and immobiliser. But I got to get right up to the bike before it responds to the fob. As in, almost touching the bloody thing.

It was never the case with my spyball. Now, I know it may be the batteries, but this was a brand new alarm. A friend of mine said it may be because i live in an urban area and there will be interference?

Anyone know how i can boost the signal strength of these fobs?

I don`t like Acumen alarms and I despise their after sales attitude,

Hold it against your head as sugested,

try your hip, it may help if you have a metal hip fitted ( now that`s an ideal reason to have a hip replacement )

Are you for real? Sorry this might sound so daft. But i vaguely remember seeing something like this on Top Gear. Or is it just a running joke that I've just gotten on the wrong side of?

Yep. Hold it against your head. This isn't april fools. The Top Gear tip may seem like BS, but against all sanity it actually works. Think about how moving your body around the room, and often picking up the receiver itself, can improve the reception of a weak FM signal on a cheap transistor radio. That's basically what you've got two of in the key fob and bike module. Something to do with earthing, capacitance and inductance I'd wager. Y'know, the deep voodoo side of electronics.

Still might not be enough to give you a decent range however. You may have to think about silencing the alarm / unlocking the bike really hard whilst you do it. Possibly whilst sucking on a live mains lead to amplify it futher.

OK those last two were false, but the first one isn't.
