Have no idea how to clean my chain Embarassed not cleaned it for a while so want to give it a good scrub down. My idea would be to give it all a squirt with WD40 and then brush off the much with a small cheap toothrbush, then what?

Thats about all there is to it. WD40 isn't the best thing but it'll work. Don't be tempted to clean the chain with the bike running and in gear, unless your bored with your fingers.

Just lube it up well once cleaned.

The idea of cleaning is to remove any old, dirty lubricant off the chain. Once you have cleaned all that off you will need to reapply some new lubricant to keep the chain in good order. There are a multitude of choices from old engine oil up to expensive waxes. I prefer wurth dry chain lube. Its clean, dry and doesn't fling all over the bike.

Yup. Topic is pretty much covered completly for you. I use a different lube than marki. Goes on like a white sticky foam and soaks in. Lasts for ages.

I use parafin to clean the chain with as I heard that stuff is about the best on a budget and seems to be fine.

I agree that paraffin is a better cleaner plus its a lubricant in its own right. If you ask 10 bikers what is the best lube then you will end up buying 11 different lubes*. Laughing

(one will say "I'm using x but I prefered y")

Very true. I use the one I was given when I said to the guy behind the counter "I need O ring chain lube"

Oddly enough the can says just that very thing.

£5-£10 for a can of chain lube. Don't get too hung up looking for a specific brand, they all do about the same job. Follow the instructions on the can, particularly the bit about leaving it for a few minutes for the high flashpoint components to flash off.

Don't use WD40 as chain lube, for many reasons.
