Hi, I've got my mod 1 test tomorrow and I'm concerned about the speed i need to get to for the swerve and emergency stop.

I'm on a honda cg125 and if i try thrashing it in 2nd i feel like its too much on the bike and it feels like its giving out at 28-30 mph. if i knock it up to 3rd after giving it a good go in 2nd i'm no 100% convinced i'll have the right speed in time for the speed gate.

Can anyone give me some advice and does anybody know what the distance is for getting your speed up?

thanks

Andy

my honda cg125 gets to an indicated 35 before it won't go any more.

I have my module 1 this thursday, and this has got to be my worst fear.

i think sometimes i'm too busy looking at the speedo worrying if i got enough speed rather than just going for it. you get 2 attempts to get the speed right anyway. if my 2nd to 3rd doesn't work i suppose i'll just have to hold down 2nd n ignore the bike screaming.

let me know how you do on thursday.

I agree, leaving it in second will not harm it and will be more likely to reach the speed required in time.
I did mine on a 125 and went into second on the run upto the bend and left it there, cranking up the throttle as the bend straightens up and pinning it as soon as possible.
My 125 was probably a fair bit slower at accelerating than a cg and my speed traps were 53 and 59 I think.

Unlucky. Its painful to miss it by such a little amount. There should be a little discression. I mean 1kph was all that was missing.

Good luck for next week. Just hammer the throttle that little longer.

Unlucky mate.

Did you do it in second or third gear?

You always can spot the novice rider when they can tell you exactly what speed they were doing at the time of the accident. Really you should be looking where you're going (so avoiding target fixation and the accident) and the speed should be a feel sort of thing (based on the gear and revs). That's just more practice I guess at getting to the minimum 50kph/32mph.

So, how was the swerve itself? How did you accelorate? Did you do 20mph going into the corner, and 2/3 around the corner giving it to 23-24 or so, then once you were more or less straight did you nail it? That's how I plan to do it

Oh and by the way Map, I was trying out how fast it could go in 2nd in an empty industrial estate where the road was as long as a stretched stick.. I am quite supprised at how quickly it can get to 35 though..

thats pretty much it. entered the bend at 20 n about 2/3 way round n rolled on the throttle and nailed it on the straight. i think i opened the throttle too quickly on the straight though because the bike didn't pull straight away. i prob should have been a bit more gentle

There are two speed trap maneouvres, and for both you get a second chance if you don't make the 50kmph. Not if you forget a lifesaver or other error.

Re: judging the speed based on revs and not looking at the speedo, that is great on the road and it is quite easy to learn and get used to, but as soon as you start that test, it all goes out of the window. Although you wont be able to look at the speedo there either, its just twist and hope.

Didn't mean any specific criticism just a general comment on riding style and how to try and avoid accidents.

So if you don't do it fast enough but you didn't do a lifesaver, then you're not allowed to do it again? I thought you could do both high speed maneouvers twice EACH, if you failed to get up to speed on both first attempts.? Confused

Interesting point, I would assume that if you didn't do a lifesaver and didn't get to speed you would fail the manoeuvre but still be allowed to do it again. Perhaps if the examiner is nice he might pass you if you do the lifesaver on the second time but 'probably' shouldn't. If on any of the other manoeuvres, its an automatic fail if you don't do the lifesaver so should be the same for the speed traps.

I thought that a lifesaver was a minor. And the maximum minors you could get was 4. The only immediate fail for not doing a lifesaver was just before committing to the U-turn?

You are allowed more than 4 minors, but if you get too many in one section they count that as a major.

when u say life saver i'm guessing your on about looking over your shoulder before the swerve. i didn't do the life saver and he marked nothing against me for it and in all the test videos on the internet they say nothing about doing a life saver check on the swerve. the examiner said i did everything right on the test it was just that 49km

No, as you initially pull away and when you come to a final stop.
Lifesaver upon swerving would probably be dangerous! Looking where you're going and all that.
