 |
|
Whilst returning from the NEC on Thursday, i had the deep joy of a tyre blowing out on the motorway (controlled through epic skillz i must add), and also a sidewall puncture on a different tyre.
Luckily, i was only a mile or so from my workplace, so i limped the custard yellow MR2 back to work, abandoned the car there and got MrsGixer to come and ferry me home.
When i bought the car it had on a set of crappy Wolfrace multi-shit alloys in the wrong size (17") and with incorrectly sized shitty Chinese tyres which seemed to have the grip of wooden hoops.
I've had a set of OE MR2 wheels (far lighter than the multi-shits and i only paid £35 for them from eGay) sitting in the garage for a while, waiting for new tyres. So, rather than replace the 2 tyres on the shit alloys, i decided it was high time to fit new tyres to the OE wheels.
Spent most of Friday trying to find somewhere that had tyres in stock (It would appear that the rear tyre size (225/50/15) is quite an unusual size and is not stocked anywhere), eventually managed to source some through BlackBoots in Chesham.
Got the tyres fitted today, drove over to work (£400 lighter in pocket) and swapped the wheels over.
Now, without wishing to steal Colin's 'Captain Obvious' title.....fuck me, what a difference it makes to the car! Fitting decent tyres, in the correct sizes, to the correctly sized wheels has absolutely transformed the car! The steering is lighter and more responsive - like many MR cars, the MK2 MR2 has 'staggered' wheels (rear wheels wider than front wheels), there's far less road-noise from the tyres, and the level of grip is absolutely sublime.
This does give me a slight cause for concern however - with the old shitty tyres on, the rear would break grip with very little provocation and i could dick around with the oversteer at relatively low speeds. Now it would appear that the limit of traction is much higher, and therefore i'm going to need greater speed to get the back-end to break loose. Which means if/when it goes wrong, it's likely to be very, very messy.
Oh, and before anyone else mentions it....it will mean i can visit my gay lover and/or hairdressing appointments much faster.

If its a turbo then I can overlook the fact that its yellow. If its not then you are clearly a homosexual. |

I had an MR2. 90-degree turns from the lights were a barrel of laughs. ____________________ "There's the horizon! Ride hard, ride fast and cut down all who stand in your way!" |

My MR2 was transformed by decent tyres and it is widely known that big wheels fuck up the geometry of the car. Still, now you know what a proper handling car feels like to drive! ____________________ British beauty: Triumph Street Triple R; Loony stroker: KR1S; Track fun: GSXR750 L1; Commuter Missile: GSX-S1000F; Cheap project: CBR900RR FireBlade

I miss my tubby turbo
Where I used to work there was a 90degree right hand turn out of the main car park - every night I would have a 'who can get the most sideways' competition upon leaving work with a guy who had a nissan 200sx. Although he had the slight advantage with being front engined rwd, the tubby was a lot more stable and predictable, yet still awesome. Ah how I miss it |

Just been out to attack the local twisties, and i can confirm my car is now made of 100% win and ORSUM.
The only downside of my playtime was nearly taking out a twat on a blue Triumph by Tring station - the dumb fuck pulled out of a junction in front of me and i had to slam on the brakes to avoid him.
What a twat, i'm in a bright yellow car, how the fuck did he not spot me?
I've been SMIDSY'd by cars before when out on the bike, but i've never had it happen the other way around.
I think the expression 'organ donor' sums him up quite well.
