Hi guys,

I went through some of my bikes paperwork a while back and I notice it had a new cam chain at 29,000 miles, it is now on 34,000 and is due a major service at 36,000.

Would the usual major service checks have been done when the chain was? Things like checking the shims are in spec?

Also my cam chain tensioner is making a bit of a rattle at the moment, would that not have been changed when the chain was done or is it just a sign of how prone to going they are on the older CBR's?

Thanks

If it was done at a dealer they will almost certainly have done the clearances.

The CCT will only have been replaced if it was faulty. I would be wondering more what caused the chain to go myself.

Yep was thinking the same, bike is running pretty well though so I have decided not to dwell on it for too long Laughing Just wondering whether I should bother paying a garage to do the service or whether it is simple enough stuff for me to do on the drive way. Shims etc I will want checked if they weren't checked when the chain was done. It doesn't sound bad or anything, but for peace of mind.

Shims are the valves 'Silent killer' arent they! Shocked As in, they go tighter over time, burning valves out quicker???

Check them......Check them now! Laughing

Sure it'll probably be fine Thumbs Up Wink

But just a side question if you dont mind.
How long 'should' a cam chain last? Milage wise? I know it can probably vary with most bikes and there will be many contributing factors.

Got told the one on my ZZR would never need doing in the life of the bike. I was surprised when I noticed that the CBR's one had been done.
