....goes to whoever designed the headlight assembly on the Kia Sedona.

I've just been trying to change the sidelamp bulb on mrsgixer's Sedona, i've never before owned a vehicle where it was necessary to get the spanners out just to change a sodding bulb! Unless you have tiny oriental hands, there just isn't enough room to get a normal man-sized hand in to the rear of the assembly.

I thought maybe it's just me being a bit thick, but a quick google revealed it isn't just me, it's a monumentally stupid piece of design - the whole headlight assembly has to be removed just to get access to the bulbs.

FFS, i just want to change the sidelight bulb, not launch the fucking space shuttle.

I think the hands-free pump on the soap bottle rates right up there for utter stupidity.

Hi

That kind of lousy design on car headlights isn't unusual. Did one bulb on the Jaguar last night and was going to check the other until I realised the ABS pump was just behind it (if the bulb had failed I would have persisted, but the pain and cuts were not worthwhile just to check the bulb was seated and was a high power one like the other side). The 156 isn't quite as bad but not nice. Alfa 147s are a pig to do (officially bumper off and a few hours labour, although a decent specialist can do it from below in a minute or so).

That said, not having to get the spanners out to change a bike headlight bulb is a rarity.

All the best

Keith

I have been told by a BMW specialist that a BMW X3 needs 3hrs of labour to replace a bulb because you need to remove the bumper... Doh!

Yes, Mrs Dazbo's old Vectra had a similar setup iirc

Never had to do it on any of my Gixers, just reach in, unclip, remove and replace.
Having said that, i did spend a good part of an afternoon doing a mate's VFR800 headlamp bulb - that required removing a large amount of the front inner and outer fairings.

On the car front, i recall my brother telling me he'd had to loosen and partially remove the bumper on his Golf (Mk4 or 5, i forget which) in order to change one of the N/S bulbs, so i suppose the Kia was a doddle in comparison.

Still shit design though.

@ Hetzer - i'd call that shrewd marketing aimed at stupid people, as opposed to poor design. Never been quite sure why you would be concerned by 'germs' on the soap pump, after all, you're going to be washing your hands after touching it anyway.

If I remember rightly when i was doing my old mk2 mondeo I had to remove the front grill and the headlight assy to change the bulb.

The manual for the mrs fiesta says to take the headlight unit out to change the bulb, which Ive had to do twice. The dealer wanted £25 to do it. My vectra was the same, its a joke and a con!

My Mk1 focus the dealer would take the bumper off and headlight out to change. It wasn't easy but me and my dad managed to change both in about 3 hours or fiddling with clips and taking chunks off fingers.
I think garages need a 14 year old girl on he staff to do this sort of job!

Thumbs Up I was telling a friend about the retarded advert for an automatic soap pump thing, the next day at a different friends I walked into his bathroom to see one sitting there.

Couldn't help but laugh.

My Kia Carens is the same.
Undo 3 bolts and take the headlight unit out to change the bulbs according to the manual.

I just had it serviced and it needed a replacement sidelight bulb.

The mechanic just reached in and managed to pull the bulb connectors out and change it piece of cake!

@ Panrider - was it N/S or O/S? I could just manage to get into the recess for the N/S (didn't need doing, i was just checking to see if it was me being a 'tard), but the coolant res and washer res were both in the way on the O/S - hence my removal of the headlamp assy.

TBH, it wasn't that much of an arse, took me about 15 minutes to do (including removing it again because i forgot to put the cover back on Embarassed ), i'm just used to bulb changes being a 'tool-less' process.

@ Silver - having previously owned both a Ford Galaxy and a Toyota Previa, i'm generally really impressed with the Kia. For the money we paid for it, the spec/trim level is very good, other than minor maintenance it's never had a major problem (touches wood), and the interior is very well laid out. My only real gripe is the sloppy cable linkages for the gear shift which can be a little porridge-like.

For gods sake dont buy a polo then, i decided last time to let halfords change the bulb as I got sick of cutting myself trying to turn my hand into a contortionist position, they have buggered the motor thing which raises the headlight, dont ask me how but they will reimburse me if a vauxwagon garage can prove it was them. I then got quoted 150 if it needed adjusting and 300 if I needed a new one Shocked

Will cook a mate Sunday dinner and he can look at it for me.

It was O/S. I'd never actually tried just getting the bulbs out - stupidly just following what the manual said. Its not a tricky job, just 3 bolts and wiggle the light unit out - 10 minutes total unless you drop a bolt in the bowels of the engine compartment Smile

The Pan and the ex's Fiat Stilo are about on a par for being the hardest to change.

I took it no one saw the video, that renault magane costed £50 odd quid to have a light bulb changed, if it had xenon lights it would have cost over £300!

To be honest I sold Kias new for a while, they are very very cheap for what you get BUT they do depreciate accordingly. buying one a couple years old is always a winner. Sedona, they had the 2.9 CRTD in them? Very spacious 7 seater those. what year is it?

On my 97 toyota corolla, I open the bonnet and pull out the bulb carriers on the back of the lights, takes about 5 minutes to change both of the headlight bulbs.

Old jap cars FTW Thumbs Up .

Aye, it's the 2.9 CRDI, it's on a 54 plate, LE model, we picked it up for cheap and have owned it a couple of years now. It is very roomy, especially in comaprison with the Galaxy we had before it. Plus, having 2 sliding side-doors is excellent from a convenience point of view; Previa only had 1 sliding door, Galaxy had hinged doors.

For the money, i think they're hard to beat!

I agree wholeheartedly (who is arsed about getting their hands "contaminated" right before they wash them?). But there are obviously people out there stupid enough to buy them which is money in the designer's pocket. So for that reason alone I wish it had been me.

Laughing Wink That is proof in itself! They can be had for very cheap, OK so they are not great on fuel but for the space and practicality they are very good. You get a proper boot with all seven seats in and that is a big deal in the large 7 seat people carriers.
