PostPosted: 21:52 - 01 Feb 2011    Post subject: Triumph T595 - Coolant leak Reply with quote

Hello, I have a 1997 Triumph Daytona t595 955cc triple. I ride all weathers and it has proved to be very reliable in the past.

However after a ride through town 30-40mph about a week ago my bike got very hot, i shut off the engine, let it cool, and carried on as normal and the bike seems to have resolved the problem. However I have recently noticed (which may date back before this incident) that coolant appears to be leaking from the drain/bleed plug on the left side of the engine which I've noticed after stopping.

Has anyone experienced this before? maybe on another bike?

It seems to run fine now i.e. not get too hot on motorway runs but drips coolant still, just a bit. Could this be a qucik fix? Maybe a blown gasket/seal somewhere? it had fresh clips, hoses and coolant about 3 months ago.

I have attached a pic of the bolt in question with an arrow but is an old pic so doesnt show the mess just the area im on about.

I will investigate properly when I have time but thought I may try for advise before I get my hands dirty.

Thanks for reading, much appreciated, Ed

I'm not sure but it looks like a coolant drain point, judging as that is the side stand side, that would be the lowest point of the system.

The first thing I would do is check to see if it has a copper washer and replace it

According to Bike Bandit there should be a washer.

I'd replace that as the first step.

Its easy i've done one of these. Take out the bolt, remove copper washer. Place washer over gas hob until it starts to glow. Then cool it in some cold water. Clean up the bolt and refit. You will lose most of your coolant so that will need topping up. Very Happy

Im just after that drain bolt washer at the min, bike bandit has it, triumph online doesn't seem to. Anybody used bike bandit before? An order for 1x washer overseas seems a bit daft really.

Lol it's a copper washer take the bolt to any hardware shop and buy one that fits it if it cost more than 25p I will be surprised.

You would pay no more than £1.50 for it at Triumph, it not that bad, but bigger PITA is the fact you may have to wait a few days for it.

I did the usual weekend tinker today, warmed the bike up, took it round the block got it upto temp (fan cut in). Looking closely it isnt the drain bolt thats at fault, once the cooling system is fully running it forces leaked coolant out a hairline crack in the side of the cylinder on the left hand side very close the the drain bolt and fin at the front. It seems to be on one of the main channels for the coolant to flow up or down.

Not a simple fix, but is theyre anyway I can treat/seal this crack?

Is it worth trying some sort of paint or other agent to apply to the outer surface to slow/stop the leak?

Ahh that's not good. Because it's on the cylinder i wouldn't be too happy doing a repair.

You could use araldite or something to fix it up, and i'm sure it'd be fine, but i wouldn't be risking it for any long period of time.

Dunc

I'd wait to see if there are any better suggestions. Rad weld is not an ideal solution.

Hi

Seeing as it shouldn't hurt, I've bought a tub of k-seal, good reviews as far as iv seen and should do a better job than radweld. right?

Anybody had any experiences or words of warning for any of these products for bikes?

This seems like the only option at the moment cos im skint.

Link below in case anyones interested, cheapest i could find.
