I need some advice.

My friends ped was stolen and found by police in a public road. He told them to leave the ped and that he would recover it.

He payed to have it recovered to my house so that I could repair it for him. The police were at my house (for reasons which I wont go into) one night and decided they would be funny and recover the ped from my garden whilst it had its steering lock on.

It is now in a recovery yard and they are saying I have to pay to have it recovered. £120.

FUCK THAT. They can go FUCK themselves. SefThey had no right taking it and have caused us a lot of trouble. Obviously we cant get it out of the yard either without £120 or with an order saying it can be released.

How should we proceed with this?

go in with the friend, with his reciept for the recovery and the crime number, ask to speak to a senior officer, remain calm and explain the situation (always remain calm). If still no joy, go to the local papers, because it sounds like blatant extortion.

Definately with Pete on this one, stay totally calm.

You will need your friend with you, with his V5 and all the other relevant paperwork and explain the situation to the police.

Best of luck getting your money and the bike back Thumbs Up

Thanks guys

I hope I can sort this out, because I was borrowing the bike at the time and I have to pay for this if I end up having to pay.

The fact that your friend made it quite clear that he would arrange the recovery after it had been found makes the Police liable for any costs incurred as they have failed to comply with the owners instructions.

The crime complaint should make it quite clear whther the owner wants it recovered by the Police or whether he wants to arrange his own recovery.

As has already been mentioned, go into the local Police Station with your friend and the V5, advise them what has happened and the invoice should be struck off, but make sure that they inform the garage who possesion it is currently in as they will want payment before it is released, and if they have nothing in writing or conformation you could end up in a big argument!

Make sure you also get the name and collar number of the Policeman you speak to!

Any garage that is asked by the police to recover a vehicle has a standard police call out charge. £120 is about average these days. Don't forget though, that every day it remains in their yard, it will incur storage charges. These days they are around £12-20.

The police have the option to have a vehicle towed away if they are unsure as to the ownership.

Personally, I'd go back and talk to the police. However, they rarely pay the garages and the garage won't release the vehicle without the money.

Might take a while, cos the wheels of the plod industry grind as slow as any government department when having to go backwards.

Ask for numbers. Crime numbers, PC numbers, whatever. They like it when you are able to join up the dots for them. Saves them time, means they can match casefiles more easily, and means they have more time to go out catching "real" criminals.

And put EVERYTHING in writing (lucid and rational letters).

So long as you do all the above in a sensible, reasonable and rational manner (and don't say FUCK to the rozzers as much as you have here Laughing ) you may get it sorted (in the end).
