CR500 mito sounded like such a good idea...

Can anyone suggest some decent MX/big singal engines to put in a mito? Need to be 45bhp+ and reliable within reason, i.e. be able to do at least 1000 miles between taking the engine apart.

Could you not just save yourself a lot of work and get a Yamaha SZR660? TZR250 chassis with an XT660 engine in it. Ram_doom on here had one for a while and did a tour of Scotland on it so it must have been ok.

You don't want a big single, you want an RD350YPVS. can make a reliable 65bhp, and needs pistons and rings every 7.5k miles.

A big two stroke single will destroy the bike through vibration. Performance bikes are making a CR500 Mito at the moment, and I can almost guarantee the thing will vibrate like a washing machine with a brick in it. If it doesn't crack the frame, I'll be very surprised.

Because I might as well get a il4 600 the SZR is a lardy fucker.

The RD350 Mitos are fairly common, I know the frame may need reinforcement but that shouldn't be too much of a problem. I was looking at KTM 4t engines, but once you include all the wiring for an injection system the ECU etc it gets expensive and complicated. The older engines will be harder to get parts for.

Probably easier to lose a lot of that weight than it would be to get a bigger engine into a Mito.

That said when taking pics at Silverstone once there was an SZR660 in the fast group. It was one of the quickest bikes in the fast group, which given Silverstone is a fast track favouring bikes with a load of power was pretty surprising.

All the best

How about a KTM380 EXC? They're not THAT uncommon and the EXC generally has longer service intervals listed as it's enduro.
As I've gone on about before, my 87 KTM 350 enduro I reckon would have an excellent 'characterful' engine for a road bike - no powervalve so a big hit as you got into the power band (while generally from what I've seen the CR500 is pretty flat - as it makes loads of low down grunt too.)
Oh and the CR500 is well known for shaking everything to bits - bike and rider. On a competition bike regularly serviced that's designed to hit 100mph over rough surfaces, it's not an issues - but can be more so for a road bike designed for a smooth engine to on tarmac.

I'd thought about such things in the past, but my current ambition in that area is something like my 200EXC in a Honda RS125 chassis I reckon. It's moderately reliable, but still got a big 'kick' feel as it comes into the powerband, which I like (not all 200s do, I almost wonder if mine has some SX setup).

Or you could just buy an SM converted 380EXC, which may well weigh less anyway Smile.

Remember the LC4 is a decent chunk heavier than the competition engines. My LC4 KTM weighs in at 138kg as stock - while a Husaberg 650 weighs in at 109kg or something.

Weight vs reliablity, the KTM looks like a good choice compared to 10 minute piston changes Laughing

Even so a striped down Mito with an LC4 engine should still be Sub 140kg wet.

My 675 is 175kg with some fuel and everything else - and that's got a 675cc triple making over 100hp.

But, then I probably would have more fun on a 50hp single weighing 140kg.
Or you could just buy an RGV250 etc and go riding instead of sitting in the garage Razz.

It is more about the building of it, plus my mate already has the Mito and I have sourced an RS125 rearend for next to nothing so the chain is on the right side.

I wouldn't want a 45bhp 200cc single 2stroke engine in a road bike TBH. G, i can imagine that your 200EXC feels like a big bore kitted 125SX to ride, but on a road bike with 100mph+ gearing, i don't reckon having a peaky powerbandy engine is the one really! As you say not all 200's have an exciting or sharp powerband. My KMX200 didn't feel that pokey compared to a 125 version, but then you notice that your going faster for less effort and not needing to change gear, so it's cool!

As for the CR500 engine, yes they are supposed to be quite vibey and not that civilised. But the stump pulling low end, and the flat delivery signing off at 6000rpm, would be far more interesting to me, than a peaky engine making the same numbers like an RGV250 lump for example.

I've always wanted to re-engine a light sports bike like a Mito, with a 300-330cc 2stroke trials engine instead! Your unlikey to top around 30bhp, but the delivery would be so interesting compared to a 30bhp 125, and i reckon it would be a stupid amount of fun to ride too. A big trials engine would probably be alot less vibey than an open class MX engine would too!

I personally like the peaky powerband for that feeling of 'working the bike'. Unfortunately it's my only KTM that I don't have a V5 for.
As I've mentioned elsewhere, one of my most for road rides due to the bike was my RS250 when it had a stuck powervalve (37.5hp on the dyno).

Have you tried any of the proper enduro 300s? All the modern-ish ones I've ridden (including my 99 KTM) I've ridden have very flat powerbands that are quite trials like. Ok, they make 50hp, but low down have really good pull for hill climbing and jut grip in nasty stuff etc. But if you're going for that sort of thing, similar from plenty of 'reliable' 4 strokes already out there to some degree.

Do it Thumbs Up

Get yourself a cr500 engine and put into the mito frame, Will be a nutty bike.

I am doing something very similar project at the moment. Putting a KTM 500 MX engine into a RS125 frame

This kind of thing has been done on 125ccsportbikes forum. Someone there did it and they ended up getting cracks in the frame from vibration. Not sure what engine it was, but it was put into a 125 2 stroke frame. I cant remember if it actually snapped, but the guy was still riding it with the cracks that had developed.

There was someone that did post on here a bit that died when their bike hit the tree. It wasn't conclusive if the frame brake before after impact.
They had been told by multiple people on VD that it was a bad idea to put a CR500 engine in a 50cc chassis, but went ahead with it anyway. Little or no extra strengthening.
Obviously, to be fair, the 125cc chassis do tend to be a fair bit sturdier.
