Does anyone know the year when the CG125 changed from being ugly to being not quite so ugly.

I know it had the latter in 1995, just looking for the registration I need to look for to get a newer shaped one.

I would like to know when it changed from:
https://www.honda.com.cn/product/2r/homemade/images/cg125.jpg
to
https://www.mcpoolen.se/images/mc-honda-99-cg125-rod.gif

Thanks guys, great forum.

i know they did a big revamp of it in 99, but i think the change in look came before that.

First update of styling was 1988, where the 70s style was replaced with a more modern look (see pic). Then the rear tail peace and tail light was altered slghtly again in 1991 when the bike had the same apperance as the one in your bottom picture Thumbs Up . Bear in mind many of the CG clones made by easten companys today are based on the origenal 70s style CG, so you wont get the revamped look if you choose one of those.

your bike looks different again to a '95 model I've seen, which looks a lot like my second pic.

Agreed, the Hongdou cg125 is brand new, but is based on the 70s model.

I'm after the model with the curvier tank than the attatched picture above.

I'll see if I can dig up some more pics.

and I agree, after '91 I think the rear light looks more like the R1's rear light. Maybe I'm paying the CG a bit too much of a compliment there...

yes it is different, the one in my pic is the one made between 1988 and 1991, which replaced the 70s style one and was replaced in 1991 by the one in your bottom pic.

I just showed it so you could see if you would be interested in that model as well as the later model CG in your bottom pic. Sorry for the confusion.

Edit: Curvier tank was around in 1994 definatly, may be the one introduced in 1991, or may have been updated again before then. My freind has an M reg CG that looks identicle to the one you want.

So let me try and get this straight.

There's the old school 70s model (my first pic)
There's the 88-91 model (your pic)
There's the 91-99 model (My second pic)
Then there's a 99 onwards model, which I think is slightly curvier.
Then very recently, I think they gained a front disk and an electric start..

EDIT: Just noticed BadlyDamaged's edit, this is indeed a conundrum. I'm after the shape like my second pic, which (to me) looks like it has the tank curve ever so slightly like a bandit. (Maybe I'm imagining it)

That shape was definately around in 95, and my 92 pic, isn't quite as curvy, but still not bad.

I think so, I based my info on this list of CG devopments that is listed on partspartners:

(MAY 78) CG125K1

(MAR 81) CG125KB New electrics and tank strips

(APR 82) CG125C (CG125-1272831) Replaces the CG125KB

(NOV 84) CG125C (CG125-1286629) Discontinued

(NOV 84) CG125E (CG125-1288790) Replaces the CG125C Revised detail

(APR 85) CG125E (CG125-1293380) Discontinued

(APR 85) CG125F (CG125-1342463) Replaces CG125E Chromed Grabrail

(FEB 88) CG125J (CG125BR-8100001) Replaces the CG125F, Now made in BRAZIL, Finished in Red,Blue or White.

(SEP 91) CG125K (CG18-100001) Similar to the CG125J Different decals and smaller grabrail. Finished in Red, Blue or White

(JAN 93) CG125K Different finishes available, Red or Blue

(APR 95) CG125S Replaces the CG125K

(NOV 95) CG125T Replaces the CG125S

I know for sure the seat and rear plastics were modified beween 88 and 1994, and I imaganed it would be in the 1991 update where the grb rail was altered (which would fit in with altered rear plastics). It could be possible the platics and tank were altered yet again for the M reg year model.

A quick google image search may reveal more:

https://www.swordtail.free-online.co.uk/cg125.jpg
That has the updated rear light and the newer than 91 tank.
Not sure of the year of that one.
https://www2.uol.com.br/bestcars/carros/motos/honda/antigas/cg125-81-2m.jpg
That's an '81 with the larger seat. Not the curvy tank
https://www.brmoto.com.br/pics/m-cg125.jpg
2004 model, looks very very nice.

Ah, this 1993 model: https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=9806&item=2486846305&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW seems to have a different tank and plastics to my mates M reg, so I guess the update would be either 1994 or 95 for the one you want. My friends definatly is the style you want, so I would look for post M reg bikes. Sorry for giving the wrong info. Must have a sit down and read my CG spotters book to become the ultimate CG anorak Laughing .

you're correct, that one on ebay has a different rear light to the one I really want. But that one isn't unpleasant.

so I guess I'm looking post 94-95
but post 91 might be acceptable.

thanks for your input man, great help!

Sounds good, my mate paid £400 for his M reg CG a few months back, it was originally up for £550. That bike had done 13000 miles, had long Tax (3months MOT) and was in good condition. Hopefully you will be able to pick up a new style CG pretty cheapish as well, good luck Thumbs Up .

CGs are cheap as anything, and simply refuse to die so I'm not particularly worried about mileage.

as long as it has a few months MOT and a chance of passing another one without too much work.

It's a nice disposable learner bike.

thanks

The new version with electric start is slightly slower than the CG125J (CG125BR-8100001) 88-91 version.

Top gear did an episode where they proved older cars are faster than their newer counterparts.

and they were right.

maybe bikes are the same way..

ok, we've worked out in this thread, that from 95, the cg125 had the shape of the following pic.

https://www.mcpoolen.se/images/mc-honda-99-cg125-rod.gif

now when I look on biketrader.co.uk there are lots advertised as 2001 models or 2003 models, that are clearly the old shape, therefore < 94, some even < 91 here are some examples:

Example one
Example two

Now they are listed as a 2001 and a 2003 respectively. Neither are the sexier shape of the first link I pasted.

is it just misleading advertising? Or are my dates and shapes wrong?

Those are probably the cheaper liscensed clones from developing countries. Its also possible that they are non UK spec Honda bikes (hence badged as Honda) possibly as well, as I belive some countrys still get the old style ones.

Glad you managed to sort the old CGs from the newer ones Thumbs Up .

no honda themselfs did a relaunch with the older shape. that is actually what the hongdou is based on. the newer model from honda. yes they look ugly and the go even slower but are official honda bikes so are reliable.

gah.

I'm just gonna have to phone people up and ask what shape it is.

I thought there'd be a 'history of the cg125' website or something.

maybe people just don't get that sad, who knows!?
