so this afternoon I rode away from my home and withing a mile going up a hill and at about 50mph 7k revs my back wheel locks up and with a quick dip of the clutch i pull over. the bike wont start... hit the start button and it sounds like and feels like the battery is almost dead, but after a few minutes of pushing the electric start on off styles it starts to move the piston and she fires up, then fails a further 500 meters up the road, so i do the same again and leave her running for a minute and go about my business and in the following 6 miles and maybe 95mph as a check on private land it seems fine, but in this life nothing happens for no reason, so what am i to expect? new rings, new piston?

its a 2001 nsr with 17k miles not sure on engine rebuild ever or change or rings but it has been direstricted and the rc valve seems to be open about a 5th of a turn late.

many thanks nsr kid

Hey,
Yep, nothing in this life happens for no reason and thus i would suggest that you either get the head off there to check it out asap or at least get the exhaust off to see what kind of state the top end is in. Looking up into the exhaust you can get a rough idea of whats going on in the cylinder.

To have a full on seizure i would have thought rings and piston if you're lucky, as long as the inside of the cyliner is not damaged.

Either way, it will need looking at as a seizure is a sign of something neededing attention.

Exhaust is an easy job to do but getting the head off would be preferable if you have a couple of hours to tinker around.

best regards

My 2000 model NSR125 let go at that mileage, albeit with a complete failure of piston which took the barrel with it. Perhaps yours seized then freed itself - in which case your pison may still be in one piece.

It's best to not use it again until you've found out what happened.

yeah pretty much sounds like a siezure. tbh the rings should have been changed at around 7000 miles and the piston about 7000 later. once you've had a look a the engine and seen what you need replacing, i'd check your cooling system and carb jets and settings just in case.. lean mixture or poor cooling will likely cause any 2 stroke to sieze.
