Garage Door

Just wanted a suggestion of how best to cheaply go about securing this garage door, as i don't believe the current crappy padlock is really providing much actual security.
This said, i do need reasonably convenient/easy access, and i don't want anything abundently obvious like a garage defender.

Note: It's up and over style - and the main lock doesn't work, i lock it by drawing the lower left bolt across and padlocking it.

I have a very similar/same garage door.... and by coincidence found some maintenance paperwork for mine just the other day...

I found an old reciept from Garage-Door-Spares for a replacement handle that I bought a few years ago. £20 to buy the main locking handle, and about 10 minutes to replace the old one

Those doors are far too easy to get into as the metal bends if you pull from the bottom, so securing from the base is a must into the concrete or 2 hasps either side.

These are throw bolts, they attach to the bottom of the door and a go 7cm in to the ground. Thus stopping the door being easily bumped open.

You obviously need to drill 2 holes 7 cm or so deep. Plus you'll need to drill a couple of holes at either side of the garage door, one for the throw bolt to go through. The other to attach the bolt to the door.

One good thing from these are they are hidden. Having lots of padlocks on the outside advertises the fact there is goodies in there.

the best thing to do is buy one of those cheap mobile alarms i think there about 15 -20 quid unfortunaty there are so many ways of getting into a garage one of the most common is to drill a small hole 150 mm above the lock and put a small hooked instument through to hook the wire make no noise due to the tin foil garages are made out of.
all tho you could make 2 L shaped brackes atached to the bottom corners of the garage that comes down to a bracket bolted to the floor with a eyley for a paddlock to go through much more descrete than them great big things ?

Standard garage doors are notoriously unsecure and even when you add security if its on the outside its vulnerable because its accessible and the crims can get to work on it given the time. If you have another access point then security on the inside is far better however you then have to make this access door secure but this is usually easier.

I've got an integral garage and have a door from inside the house into the garage so i've fitted bolts on the inside of the door. Basically a crim would never get my door up and over now, unless they have some heavy duty kit in which case they might as well cut a hole in the door and be done with it.

My main problem is now stopping the baddies from breaking in the house and then having the cover and time to get through the door in the house into the garage. But i've put more locks on that door too and keep the keys with me and not on a hook next to it like i did before i got the bike!!

When alls said and done if the crims want your bike they will take it and thats the end of the story....read the article in this months motorcycle sport and leisure...they interview an ex crim. All you can do is make it as hard as possible for them. The more security the more crims you put off.
