Noticed it while at work tonight, stayed orangey all night whereas usually it's only just when it rises, was also still bigger than usual, presumably from being at it's closest, almost looked like another planet rather than the moon.

Wasnt it only 0.3% bigger than usual? Fool you if you think it looked 'obviously' bigger.

It looked obviously bigger, on the night it was supposed to look it's biggest it looked the same size as usual to me because it was bright and white/grey, lastnight it didn't. It's pobably to do with the different colouration, didn't say it was bigger smartarse Rolling Eyes

The reason the moon looks 'bigger and more orange' on certain nights is not only because it's at perigee (closest approach to the Earth) but also because it is low in the sky near the horizon.

That means the light reflecting from the moon towards us has to travel through more atmosphere to reach our eyes as opposed to directly overhead, this causes it to magnify and collect light pollution from the atmosphere/smog etc which causes the off-colour.

Thumbs Up.
