I will be abroad (France / Germany) on 01/05/11 (Sunday) and was wondering how this would affect the availabitity of cheap hotels / petrol stations / places to eat on the Sunday, and of course the Monday.

Does anyone have any advice / experience?

It'll be fine, for a few reasons.

Firstly, European countries don't observe all the same bank holidays as we do.

Secondly, I've been in European cities several times when there is a local bank holiday. All you'll find is that there are a couple of shops that are closed. Most will still be open in large cities. Same with petrol stations in my experience. Vast majority still open.

Hotels are unaffected obviously. Well, the price may be a little more, but not worth writing home about.

Sunday May 1st is 'labour day' in France... In Germany its just a normal weekend, on the Monday. - the kids are back in school after the Easter break.

Sooner or later opinions fade and the name on the tank matters not. I think that happens somewhere between 3rd and 4th gear. Enjoy the ride... everything else takes care of itself.
