In solidarity with our Froggish and now apparently Micklander brethren, the Motorcycle Action Group would like to have a bit of a rally in Birmingham on Saturday the 2nd of July 2011. Fist shaking, horn tooting, rev-rev-revvving, death before hi-vis (literally), that sort of thing. As long as it doesn't offend or inconvenience anyone, I mean, we don't want to give a bad impression of bikers.

Anyway, they'd better get a move on with details. I mean, do I even have time to buy the requisite Harley? Confused

Load of crap. When I was hit by a driver who didn't look I was wearing hi-viz. If they don't look, they don't look, nothing you can do. Next they'll say we need to have helmets like this:

Mmm, despite the tone of my post, I do agree that mandatory hi-vis has little merit. And that's even though I choose to wear hi-vis myself. Sleeved even, like the Paddies are pondering. There are valid, reasoned arguments against breaking up your outline, especially in cluttered urban situations which is exactly where multi-vehicle accidents actually occur.

That said, I think that the eventual introduction of it is inevitable, and that this war was lost without a shot being fired when it was slipped in for DAS candidates and MAG et all said nothing, because they weren't DAS candidates.

And I know I don't need a Harley to be in MAG. I've got the beard, and that's really all that matters. Thumbs Up

A bit presumptuous here but you appear to be knocking a riders rights organisation for letting things happen despite you not actually offering any form of support to them?

So, see you in Birmingham? You can't miss me, I'll be the one with the orange fluorescent jacket on. Dance!

Incidentally, please note that I have promoted this here because nobody from MAG has done so. They're welcome, and if any MAG members want to put a more positive spin on it, well, here we all are, ears akimbo.

Didn't even know it was mandatory for DAS candidates to wear high vis.

Does this mean I can't ride around naked in my turban anymore? Or does it have to be a high vis turban?

(Quite why they've prioritised high vis over other proper clothing boggles the mind. Note I'm not in favour of that either, I just find it very odd.)

Had to wear Hi-Vis doing truck test, driving a 14t lorry too!
(And the only place you get out is at the test centre, at the end of your test.)

Well, technically, but it's very vague:

(7) The holder of a provisional licence authorising the driving of a motor bicycle other than a learner motor bicycle shall not drive such a vehicle otherwise than under the supervision of a certified direct access instructor (within the meaning of regulation 64(2)) who is—

(a)present with him on the road while riding another motor bicycle,

(b)able to communicate with him by means of a radio which is not hand-held while in operation,

(c)supervising only that person or only that person and another person who holds such a provisional licence, and

(d)carrying a valid certificate issued in respect of him by the Secretary of State under regulation 65(4),

while he and the instructor are wearing apparel which is fluorescent or (during hours of darkness) is either fluorescent or luminous
.

The minimum amount of "apparel" that might satisfy this provision is left as an exercise for the reader's imagination.

Remember to ask to see your instructor's 65(4) certificate, kids - he has to be "carrying" it. Rolling Eyes

While I remember about reminders, the DfT's Red Tape Whingathon ends on Friday, so get your objections and pre-objections in early.

My alpinestar black jacket, looks black in the day time, but at night when lights shine on it there are sections on the shoulder and chest that become reflective. Best of both worlds for me.
I do have a hi-viz jacket but it has an xxxxxxl label in it to go over all my gear. That's right xxxxxxxxl me being a fat bastard and my gear having good protection in it makes for a large person not to be seen.

From the another site

Why is it a lot of BCF members moan about stuff but do sod all about anything in real life and moan about people that do.
"yeah, the french know how to complain and show their anger" but then have a go at people in the uk who are prepared to at least step away from the keyboard and make their feelings shown.

Anyway. I think I might head up there to add to numbers. Every little can help, as shown in France.

Not a member of mag, wear a hi vis on occasions and my bikes have linked brakes thank you very much but we should be able to choose.
Thats why i'm going.

28-06-2011 BRUM DEMO 2ND JULY 2011 - BE HEARD!!

While we appreciate that many of us work shifts/ have families/ live far away, we urge you all to to make it to Birmingham this Saturday, 2nd July for the Brum Demo.

Things are changing fast within Europe and complaining after the event is often too late, so Brum this year is specifically drawing attention to the following:

The Euro Regulation on its way through the legislative process that desires compulsory ABS/ linked brakes, anti tampering on the powertrain from airbox to rear tyre size, compulsory headlight use, onboard diagnostics etc
Then there's the threat of compulsory day-glo/reflective clothing as is proposed in our neighbours Ireland and France.
And the power for the authorities to make roadside checks of bikes for 'road worthiness', as part of the broader pan-euro road worthiness proposals advocated by the private companies TuV and DEKRA.
We should also show our support for the French who are facing a ban on filtering and a ban on bikes over 7 years old being used in urban areas.

Please come along at midday for a 1pm start to: Hare and Hounds, Lickey road, Rednall B45 8UU

It's been a long time since riders have publicly demonstrated their feelings about ill-judged legislation from Europe.

We look forward to seeing you there en masse, let's show the French bikers that we know how to demonstrate too!

I know that some of the NTBPT guys are going to be riding up to this together meeting at the Ace Cafe around 10am.

Yes, exactly.

Imagine what that'll do to biking if it gets through.

We do really need to start getting off of our cant be bothered arses and make feelings shown rather than "sorry, not a beardy mag member so no can do"

Harley riders will have to get bikes designed and engineered after 1920?

Lobbying your MEP might be more effective than snarling up Birmingham. That isn't going to achieve a darn thing to influence Brussels, and Mike "the bike" Penning already seems like a pretty sensible chap to have onside in the DfT.

All that said, I'm trying to secure an away-pass from the wife for this event, but more because it looks like a laugh than because I think it'll achieve anything.

The prospect of being involved in something those self-obsessed cocksuckers support is enough to put me off going.

On the other hand, the opportunity to actually call them self-obsessed cocksuckers is one not to be missed...
