No, it makes you less of a track rider. Nothing to do with you as such, just your riding experience so far.
Yams was pointing out that it would be a bad idea for someone such as your self to start racing, even at a low level next year.

Perhaps if you were incredibly dedicated, you could spend a lot of money and do a lot of trackdays before the season starts next year, but it would be a struggle even for those that are fast road riders I suspect.

It seems to just be a misunderstanding ... anyone in your position would feel very intimidated if they started racing (or even did a trackday session with some racers.)

If you think Trackdays and racing are all about bravado and heroics, I suggest you try a few. It is in fact enormous fun and a really good feeling when you start to push you and your bikes limits way beyond what you realised they are capable off.

I admit I do enjoy the competitiveness maybe a bit too much, but that's why I'm looking at doing racing. I find that I push my own limits much more when 'chasing' someone faster than me and learn more. All of those (mostly women btw... just an observation of life, not trying to be 'sexist') that have said they don't feel that competitive doing track-based bike stuff (including dragging here) seem to have found and enjoyed their competitive side at some point Smile.
Personally I think it's a much better way of taking out aggression.

I wasn't specifically interested in racing right now because I know I don't have the skill.

I still think the racing team (of EXPERIENCED girls) is a good idea. Just not for me. Right now.

Razz Razz

I just got narked cos of the arrogant attitude shown at the start of the thread. So I took the bait *grin* and ran with it.

Hi

Ladies race team? Given that they will probably be starting at a club level then that is no different to most other teams. At that level a "team" is not someone trying to sort out the best rider they can, more likely a rider trying to make themselves look professional so that they can get sponsorship.

However racing is very competitive. If you had any concerns at all about being cut up on a track day then you are going to get torn to pieces in a real race.

There are some good and fast female racers. Have been one or 2 in grand prix racing. But thinking you are fast is a very different thing to being fast.

All the best

Keith

For the benefit of Hellkat can I just clear up my view on all this, and attempt to haul the topic back on track Wink

No-one is saying girls shouldn't be racing. The only concerns I have are with creating an 'all-girls' bike team and using the whole gender issue as a marketing tool. Whilst it will indeed create publicity, we should all be aware that this publicity can just as easily turn against you very, very quickly. Girls already in racing have a hard enough time as it is, without 'Team-bikegirl' prancing around boasting about how they'll "beat the boys" at their own game etc etc. I'm guessing the media etc will then be scrutinizing every female racer even more closely than they are already - something the other female racers may have issues with to be honest. For years, female racers have tried to remove the stigma of girls in the racing environment, and if you do fail at this project - all you will do is undo years of hard work and effort on their part.

Sorry if this sounds patronising or offensive in any way but please believe that I do think girls are just as entitled to race as men. I just believe the last thing they need now is someone coming in and playing the gender card for their own gains.

I also believe that if you are a racer then you will want to overtake the bike infront just as much whether the rider is male or female. The whole "lets beat the boys" thing is so off the mark it's unreal. A racer will just want to win, regardless of who they beat.

Thumbs Up

Yeah, okay, I can settle back down with that one. Perhaps Bikegirl was just being enthusiastic in her optimism to get a race team up and running.

There's nothing too wrong in the power of positive belief as a team-spirit exercise . . . but I can appreciate that to use it as a marketing tool before they've "proved themselves" might backfire upon more than just the team itself.

I still hope she gets a team up and running, and manages to kick arse anyway Smile

Heh Thumbs Up

IMO girls are generally not as quick as men, I blame lack of ego Wink However, if a girl finds she's doing well in the fast group at track days and keeping up / beating the faster guys, then she should give racing a go.
If she does well enough, she'll get sponsorship / kudos on her own merit, not just coz she's a girl.
It's tougher for girls to be taken seriously as historically motor racing has been a men's sport, so for a woman to give it a go, she HAS to be fast or will just get laughed at.
Good luck to anyone trying to make it in racing, male or female! Thumbs Up Very Happy

You'll have to remind me... I don't recall saying that as a Team Bikegirl ethos. I just want more girls competing and I want us to get onto the podium. I'd be a little naive to think we could beat the boys with a bunch of new racers.

I aim to beat the "boys" as much as possible in my personal life (including biking) but then I actually mean everyone because I believe you have to aim high if you want to get anywhere. It's not a Team Bikegirl ethos. Just mine.

When I started this thread I had no intention of it being a sexism issue. I expected a few comments but not quite such an outcry.

To be honest I don't see what the fuss is all about. So I want to get more girls into racing. How is that sexist? I've read the arguements but none have really been much more than "but you're being sexist" which is not my intention.

Yes I will make the most of it as a marketing too. So what? It doesn't harm existing female racers, in fact I'm in talks with some to bring them into Team Bikegirl if this works. They want in because higher media exposure = more sponsorship. If I can get money and coverage for it and all the women can benefit then great. And I fully intend to.

Just looking at your website, no offence but the page about "come join us" makes it sound like anyone can go racing, sounds like a-b-c, 123 my first race type stuff... never knew getting into racing was as easy as owning a bike!

Also marjay is right you do have a chip on your shoulder..

Why do all those track days?
Blokes are there to be beaten. They hate being passed on the track, oh yes, makes them feel the need to explain how rubbish their tyres are / they were just cruising for a bit / wanted to watch a bird's arse. So us girls are duty bound to stick it to 'em. Erm, there are other reasons... I'll think of some soon.

No mention to the fact it's fun, challenging your own limits and so on.. it's all "gotta beat the blokes and be better.." Rolling Eyes

Your website is very well designed though, will say that

And on the front page..

Your just trying to encourage women onto track just because they can ride a bike, it'll be a shame when people realise how slow they are in club racing, and then be put off completely Confused

It's tongue in cheek. No chip, however much you try to convince me Wink

It's to let girls know that there's an alternative to being stupidly fast on the roads. Get em on track testing with us and assess them then mentor them.
