PostPosted: 16:49 - 02 Jul 2011    Post subject: Aprilia RS125 Problem? Reply with quote

hi, last night my aprilia backfired and now wont start, i fitted a new teflon coated mitaka piston but didnt replace the power valve which is obviously faulty because before it backfired i revved the bike past 8k revs (which is when the valve comes into play) and thats when it happened. ive taken the valve out and taken the barrell off and checked the piston and everythings fine, but when i press the electric start with the plug in it fails to spin fast enough to start, but when i take the spark plug out it moves freely but still pretty slow.

im wondering is this because my battery doesnt have enough power and i need to purchase a new one?
before this happened the bike was running perfectly, so the powervalve has caused me a problem but thats removed now.

need help asap please thanks.

battery should be showing a good 12.8+ when its sitting there off.

Try charging it first! Bump start the bike?

A power valve could be jammed, maybe strip it and clean it, check all connections.

hi mate. bumped it last night shortly after it cut out and got another back fire. checked everything today (piston, barrell) just to make sure everything is ok and it is. im sure its the battery as ive never seen the voltage so low. as soon as i click the electric start or turn the lights on it drops to under 9v so hopefully its just the battery im going to charge it over night. the batterys old.

possibly got a buyer for the bike so just getting her running smoothly

It'll bump start without a battery in it. So bump it to get it running and take it for a nice long ride to charge the battery up a bit. IF the battery stays flat even after a ride then it's useless, or possibly the charging curcuit is faulty / not connected properly.

If the bike won't bump start it's either flooded, fouled the plug, carb isn't sat on properly etc etc.

if the batterys on its last legs it wont charge up proper anyway, my last bike i had to charge the battery in my house to get 3 days use of the electrics out the bike then would have to charge it again until i bought a new one so doesnt reli mean theres something faulty... dont think the plug is fouled because theres a spark and only bought it 2 days ago to but could be a plug problem i suppose. it seems like the battery (or what ever source ) isnt sending enough power to spin the fly wheel fast enough to get the ball rolling and fire it up. the carb is on correct aswell i no that for sure. the problem is theres not enough power, its not flooded

If it wont spin fast enough, its definitely the battery.

Cover the hole, with the blanking plate for the RS engine.

Also, might need to change spark plug again as you arent using the derestricted RS anymore Wink

The GT125...

More reliable than the RS after its been treated bad Laughing

Was alright, mine had sv650 filter, modded air box, straight pipes, scorpion can and rejetted carbs, took 2 of us down a hill at an indicated 92mph Laughing GPS was only showing 80/81 and we did have oversized tyres Thumbs Up

Great bike, handled ok for a 125, bit heavy but i'd have one again.

ive been looking at them for a while, i dont really want another 2 stroke but i dont want some heavy 4 stroke that doesnt really move so im looking for something thats still nippy and can touch at least 70mph fairly easy.

not sure if i have the blanking plate. Sad

defo cant find blanking plate so ive put the valve back in, will just have to be careful not to take it past 7k-8k revs for a while. going to buy a new battery now hopefully its just that, mine has been on charge all night and just tried it in the bike and it just went lower an lower volts.

Battery does sound shagged.

Its by no means slow by the way, doesn't have the immense kick of a two stroke...but definitely will run happily.

70mph on a 4 stroke 125...does happen...shame some bikes just cant manage it, my 125 cant Laughing

got a new battery from halfords (£35) and it works fine... the old battery must have had its last breath when my bike backfired lol.. i am definetly looking into a 4 stroke alittle more. the hyosung gt125r looks great. i really want the yamaha yzf r125 but the price of them is a lot... how much do you think ill get a second hand gt125r for?

Might as well but the GT125, the YZF is a definite waste of cash, uncomfortable and slow. Much preferred the GT125.

As much as this is always said, just use the £££ to pass your test and get a more powerful bike.. no worries Wink

Used GT125R...anything from £800 to £2500 really... Aim for a 07+ reg.
