Hey all!

A very quick breakdown: I had an accident where a car driver blasted into the roundabout and into my path causing me so smash into him. He accepted full responsibility because he was Canadian, going back in 5 days and in a rental car.

So I get my rental bike (paid for by third party) and my little 2001 CBR125r - the one I paid £1050 for - has been written off. Better still, it was valued at £2380 and this is what I am getting back!

Aside from how the HELL they came up with this valuation I am left in a quandry.

- Buy another 125 and a holiday/new PC (not my preferred option)
- Get a bigger bike for around £1500 and spend the rest on a DAS course.
- Buy a car (never!)

So it seems that using this as an opportunity to get those damned L plates off is best for me. Do you lot agree?

After that the question of 'what bike' is most on my mind. The options:
- Something in the 250 - 500 range? Problem here is the lack of choice and ugly-ass commuter style of most 500s.
- A 600. More choice, power but tbh I'd rather not kill myself by going for something this powerful next.

Anyway, all help and advice will be welcomed.

Cheers,
Mumsy

DAS for sure, why spend all of that cash on another 125 when you can ditch the L plates and choose any type of bike you want? And I went from a 125 straight onto a 600 with no problems, you'll do DAS on a 500 anyway.

Then its all down to what style bike are you after. £1500 will get you something pretty sweet Thumbs Up

Well, it's mainly gonna be for commuting and pleasure so something powerful enough to get up a hill more easily than my 125 (lolzzz) and something comfortable/easy to ride.

I'm concerned about the temptation to go fast that a 600 so I'm not looking for the fastest bike out there.

Ideally I think a fully faired bike is what I want. I wouldn't say no to a big tourer but I'm not a big guy so it may not be practical.

I'd consider a Triumph cruiser if anyone wants to give me one for £1500 Razz

Prepare to be raped on your future insurance premiums.

I parked in a marked car park last year along side a load of other cars, which was bordered with a construction fence. Over the course of the day the winds really picked up and the fence wasn't secured sufficiently and collapsed on to my car, I received no payout due to my insurance company being hopeless. Obviously completely non-fault.

Because it's on the insurance database, I have to declare the accident in order to sign up for a new policy.

With the accident declared the premiums go up on average by £170.

Their excuse? I should be more careful where I park my car, as the premiums are evaluated on risk, and through the accident occuring I am higher risk.

I will never claim through insurance again, EVER.

Well hopefully it won't be too bad.

Any ideas on specific bikes? What're the most reliable 500s?

Err, why he didn't claim from his insurance. He claimed from the Canadian's. Thus he doesn't have to tell his insurers anything.

You claimed on your own insurance for the fence hitting your car, a very different scenario.

Its on HIS claim history, the insurers want to know if you have been INVOLVED, not caused etc..

Feel for me, I have to give them 11 claims Rolling Eyes

Yup. 25 and my first claim.

Would going from a 125 to a sports tourer be a really bad idea?

Insurance-wise? Not particularly: the Bandit cost half what my 125 did to insure.

not at all! as long as you get over the "lets see what this can really do" phase quite quickly you shouldnt have a problem, I went from a nsr 125 to a TDM 850 within about 9 months of my cbt and had no problem with it, if anything it was a much better experience!

I agree, that is odd. I bought an STi once but it was faulty so I took it back and swapped it for a Supra, which was also on the forecourt, and my insurance was exactly the same. I would've expected a UK2000 or WRX to be cheaper than the Supra.
