pro's and con's specific to dirt/trail kinda bikes in this case, but be interested in general.....lots still just use air cooling, but if thats fine, why complicate an engine with liquid cooling?

searching turned up nothing before anyone bitches! Razz poke google up your arse

Wotcha.

Sadly, the main reason these days is to comply with noise regulations - air cooled engines will fail on engine noise alone, never mind the exhaust.

i thought wataer/oil cooled engines were also more effecient producing more out right power? the obviouse draw back tho is the added weight

I found at prolonged Rev's Such as tanking up to leads following alex, The goose which uses an Air cooled engine did get a bit hot, ticked over a little higher than normal.
Mind you i did like the way i didn't really have to worry about anything like liquid or overheating as such.

Liquid i think are better at keeping an optimum temperture to give a better increase in performance and fuel efficeincy.

Well water cooled engines are more efficient at cooling the engine, meaning engines can run hotter (safely) and as a result can be in a higher state of tune. Thats why all commuter style lower performance bikes will be air cooled, and high(er) powered engined bikes run water cooled systems.

The water cooling system is just another thing that can go wrong, but on the whole they are simple, and easy to fix/maintain.

Problems can occur when a fault arrises and the oil and water gets mixed, causing contamination of either or the oil lubrication and the water cooling systems..

Go for air if you are lazy, and dont mind a lesser power making engine.

Water cooled engines for me please...

Air cooling is also problematic for multi-cylinder engines, especially V's, as the air flow round the engine isn't sufficient. It makes sense for a single cylinder off-road engine to use air-cooling though.

Interestingly the manual for my GPz550 (air cooled) states that you should not leave the engine idling for more than 5 minutes as overheating and serious engine damage can occur. Laughing
