Hi All,

Looking to buy a bike from a friend at work at the weekend. Suffered a low speed spill many many years ago (5-10) roughly. Know the people so know its nothing more.

Since then it's been stored in their garage, started now and then etc. Now they have advised that they never declared the vehicle 'SORN' and they have never re taxed it in all these years.

They have also moved adress since the accident.

Now I wandered if when I buy the bike, they must have a fine somewhere, would this then follow me? Or would the DVLA then start to chase them? Also, is the fine capped, or do you think it would have continued to rise (interest? charges?) over all of these years?

I dont want to buy the bike and then get lumbered with a huge DVLA bill. They have also said that they have had no contact, and if by selloing it, it then sparks up the DVLA's interest in them they might not sell it.

Any help would be great or if anyone has had similar experiences.

Nathan

You are responsible for the bike from the day you buy it.

What was done with it before that day is of no concern to you and you won't get fined for it (although your mate might).

As long as you buy it then straight away tax it/sorn it you'll be fine.

Hi

Firstly, find out when it was last on the road. If long enough ago then it will be before SORN came out. And if off the road at that time then SORN was never required.

All the best

Keith

Yes, as above. What do you think happens to all the old 'barn finds and the like. Sorning has only become a real issue since this year.

Just went to tax my other bike with no MOT.

First thing it said was this MASSIVE WARNING SIGN informing me they are actually going to rape my arse for not declaring SORN.

I bought it in March and SORN ran out february. Evil or Very Mad

Either way, they can send me a bill for back tax.. its only £16 tax

You're not. How do you think they keep their profit margins up.

They won't let you off with just the back tax. Hell, they scare people into paying their £80 bribes when they forget to SORN / tax a car or bike which is zero rated for road tax.

All the best

i recently built another bike. i used the reg and all from a bike that went off the road years back and i never declared it sorn they sent me a few letters back then asking for an 80 pound fine witch i ignored and never paid . i taxed that bike just a few weeks back without a mention of it . none whatsoever . but as you say signing over ownership may spark up more intrest with the dvla so i suppose u will just have to be lucky like me to get away with it .
