valve clearance advice

just a quick one. Am currently doing the valve clearences on the sp-1 but cant get the timing hole cover or crankshaft covers off. I've got the plugs out so can easily turn the engine over using the back wheel. So what i want to know is, because i cant get the timing cover off, can i just measure the clearances with the cam lobes pointing up to put the valves in the closed position, or do they need to be in an exact position?

On my 81 Honda, so long as the lobes are pointing away you can measure the clearance so i would think it will be the same for you.

As said make sure the lobes are facing away, also you can rest something on the top of the piston so when you rotate the crank you can see when each piston is at tdc on each stroke

Are they the round covers with the allen key slot that rounds out when you try and undo it?

If they are you can remove them using a punch and a hammer. It sounds more brutal than it actually is, you don't have to smash away with the hammer, just on the oustide edge of the cover in an anti clockwise direction so it undoes.

yeah, both of the covers are allen key types, i've not rounded either off yet but they feel like they would if i put more force onto them, i mighnt pop into halfords tomorrow and pick up some proper allen sockets rather than the 'L' type ones im using before i use the hammer Laughing . I need to change 1 exhaust shim on each cylinder so the cam's are gonna have to come out so would rather have the timing cover off to be sure it's all in the right place when it comes to rebuilding.

Tippex is your friend if you are removing and refitting camshafts. Mark the camchain and sprockets to aid refitting with the correct timing.

real men dont have camchains.

just about finished now, just treated the cylinders as two seperate engines, lined the marks up on the rear cylinders cam sprockets to be flush with the casing, facing away from each other, then stripped that and replaced the shim. Put it all back together and moved onto the front cylinder doing the same thing.

This bike is amazingly easy to work on for a sports bike, everything seems to be put together really thoughtfully which makes working on it really enjoyable, HRC and honda need to make more bikes like this, CBR800 maybe, that would be mega.
