Hello, recently the rear drum brake has been squeaking when cold, it was recently tightened to make the brake more repsonsive, the bike is 7 years old, done nearly 14,000 miles and I believe the brakes haven't been changed, are the brake shoes on the way out?

Bear in mind they don't squeak once they are warm. Smile

Brake shoe friction materials on this age of machine will be made from a composite of various materials including soft metals, coppers brass and the like, horse hair believe it or not and other strange binding materials. as such there are more prone to noise than their asbestos counter parts.
after long use or a period of heavy braking the surface of the shoe will glaze/harden this is the main cause of your noise
the fix is simple and requires no money bar a piece of coarse sandpaper.
remove your drum brake and wash out the drum area and shoes using a can of brake cleaner or if your careful not to wash out any greased components you can use hot water. once dry use the sandpaper to rub up the surface of the shoe. do this evenly.
how far you need to go will depend on how deeply glazed your shoe is.
refit, adjust and hey presto strong but silent progessive brakes. Thumbs Up

Could I just be lazy and leave it be, wouldn't all of this just get burnt up or blown away anyway? Embarassed

Or will it just build up to a pulp?

no you can leave it and all that will happen is you will continue to get the noise , it is up for debate as to if the effect on braking is of any importance on that type of brake.

only one word of warning in wet weather you may find the brake rather sharp in its current state

If it were me Id make the effort Laughing

Id make the effort too. it is only a 15 minute job. Take off your wheel which take a couple of minutes, and wipe out the drum. Sanding down your shoes may take a bit of elblw grease, but i think its worth it as breaking is the most important part of a motor vehicle. Razz

Bear in mind brake dust is not the best of things to breathe in, if sanding linings or cleaning out dust you should wear a face mask to avoid breathing in the dust.
