As long as you've passed a test and not just a cbt. yes

but some insurances exclude pillion passengers

1. As long as you have a full licence, and
2. If your insurance company asks, that you specify to them that you require pillion cover

But when you set up your 125 cover you more than likely excluded pillion cover by default setting - I'd phone with them to check.

I phoned up realising they'd not put it on my cover. Turns out, even when I asked for it on the comparison quote online, and then telephoned the quote code, they'd taken it back off by default because of my age!

I have a question on this as I never add Pillion Cover to my policies.

Does Pillion Cover work like "Helmet and Leather Cover"? In that it's just additional cover and payout for injuries to the pillion? Or is it ILLEGAL to ride with a pillion?

As far as I know it's not legal to ride with the pillion because you're not insured for it. And in an accident you'll only be covered to 3rd party status (because the insurer is legally binded to cover you, even if you void your insurance, but when you void your insurance you're only covered at TPO I think).

But hey, I'm only an L plate guy, take what I say with a pinch of salt!

We've been over this recently.

In the event of you binning it, the pillion is a 3rd party (they're not you, they're not your insurer), and can pursue you for compensation. Your insurer can't refuse to pay out to them. 3rd party insurance cannot be voided - even if someone nicks your bike, your insurer actually has to pay out to any nuns-with-kittens that they run over. Sounds daft, but the legislation is aimed at protecting victims.

However, if you'd agreed not to take a pillion then your insurer can pursue you to recover what they paid out. You really don't want that to happen.

Phone up your insurance company and specifically ask whether your insurance policy covers pillions. Most people (for obvious reasons) don't include it on their 125cc policies and it's not worth getting caught out for the sake of a phone call and maybe a tiny bit of cash paid out.

I assume you have correctly instructed your pillion(s)? To lean with you? Correct body positioning? Where to grab hold of you/of the bike? Have you adjusted (or even checked) your motorcycle's suspension and tyre pressure settings for pillions?

For example, whenever I take pillions I inform them to keep their head in line with mine when the motorcycle is leaning and when in a straight line as much as possible (looking around is okay).

I also tell them to relax and grip my Pillion Pals. The crux of this is that I also teach them that if they want to stop whenever I can, to tap me twice on the left shoulder and if they want me to stop NOW, instantly, A.S.A.P., to tap me twice on the right shoulder. For my partner we also have Scala Rider G4 intercoms.

When taking pillions safely, it's all about preparation, teaching them BEFORE they get on the bike and adequate communications.

I hope that helps. Thumbs Up!
