Does this seem fair or not?

6 points could sting a bit....

Does this mean officially ending the ACPO guidelines of 10% + 2mph margin for error? Will it be 2 points for 31mph in to 30, or even 6 points for 21mph in a 20 limit even though your speedo may say different?

Still unclear to me, are these proposals, as in may not happen or is it government speak for this is what we are going to do?

It all depends on how they apply it, which will probably be badly as usual.

It will then become an excuse for handing out £100 fines instead of £60. 40% increase in revenue for the government, can't be bad Rolling Eyes

I think it's a daft idea - it's sending out all the wrong messages.
OK, it's good for anyone caught speeding @38mph coz they don't get as many points as they would do now, but surely it's sending the message that it's not really that bad to be doing 38 in a 30?

30s are the speed limits I'm most likely to stick to as they're normally there for a reason (ie kids might run out into the road, etc.) so to say that 38mph in a built up area isn't such a bad thing, to me, is wrong.

And more bans!

I find it so difficult to stay within the speed limits on my bike I really do!

There has been so much media focus on speeding, it really p1sses me off. It is the one thing that would make me sell my bike!

Totally agree with that Thumbs Up The Government have blown speeding out of all proportion so that they can get away with more revenue making speed cameras. Me thinks these new plans are going to be made out to make "speeding penalties fair" but in reality are just going to mean loads more revenue for them in the long run. And all we can do is watch them do it, same with Petrol prices and road tax Crying or Very sad .

Will the likes of the AA/RAC be doing any investigation into how many more accidents will be caused by drivers looking at their speedo rather than the road/pedestrians. Thinking of rear end smashes, kids running into the road, cyclists wobbling, etc.

IMHO comes across as just another money earner for the government. It's already been proved many of the speed cameras are in the wrong places and do not actually cover accident blackspots. Looks like another bit of government spin to disguise the real reason by saying safety - which no-one can argue isn't a good idea - clever little government Confused

Exactly MAP, we all spend most of our time looking at the speedo it is ridiculous, I bet most crashes are caused by lack of concentration, purely because you try to keep to a stringent speed limit. grrr

2 points for speeding means more fines before you get a ban which means more money for the government. I wonder why they have gone for this one?

Whatever the arguements the politicians put forward you can be sure they've done their sums and reckon it will make them more money.

For starters, I believe we will see more fines where previously you'd have got away with it as the settings on cameras are altered to fire at lower speeds.

Of course, the whole thing is now getting extremely hypocritical as cameras are generating so much revenue that the powers that be don't want to discourage everyone from speeding as then their income would drop... Confused

That's what I thought, based on the current £60 fine. However, on the report 2 points = £40. So 12 points is now 4x3=4x£60=£240. Proposed way 12 points = 6x2=6x£40=£240.

I guess the premium comes from catching far more people at just over the limit so far more £40 rolling in Mad.

Agree with you all. Every bit of it.

I watched Alistair Darling on BBC24 this am give an interview to all this. And no decent questions posed by that limp wristed pratt Bill Turnbull. He may as well have asked him how his holiday went.

It's all about raising revenue.

Do you know, I often wondered what would happen when everybody sticks to the limits. Now we know. Lower the threshold.

They said on the News, 45mph in a 30mph limit will warrant the full 6 points and £100 fine.

Well that appears to be a change. I thought that the system now only did 6 points for 30mph over the posted limit. If my info is true then that means they've dropped the threshold by 50% Rolling Eyes Shocked.

I do not want to start a political arguement here. But do you think that Labour is the most Anti Motorist government we have ever had in power???

Or is it just changing times and they happen to be in power making a load of cash out of us?

Thumbs Up

I can't really see any of the others being much different. They may make some of the right noises but can you really see anyone easing off on motorists considering how loud the anti-motorist wankers can shout?

The answer is probably no, but they have failed to recognise fundamental changes in society, including transportation issues. Whereas previous administrations did not have the moey to invest, this one has, however it has chosen to use the extra revenue for 'social issues' and more politically correct problems, as well as funding an arguably uneccesary war.

They have been inept at sorting all transportation issues - with the exception of funding Terminal 5 at Heathrow. Look at the railway system, the London Underground, the Channel Tunnel rail link, Cross Rail - all of them are either only beginning to get investment or were massively delayed or no decision has been made. The result has been congestion on the roads and delays for travellers and commuters. This has resulted in more people turning to motorbikes and scooters (PTW's - using Government terminology) the result being that there is no room for PTW's to park in urban areas, as the government has not instructed councils to make life easier for us!

So it is not anti-motorist, just incompetent at most things and the sooner it is ousted from power, the better!

McJam - I'd be different. Until I became power crazed and hungry for money that is. Hmmm, actually thinking about it I am already. Wink

Just think of all those retest fees they'd get too. New rider only allowed 6 points, 15mph over the limit, sorry you're gone. Next.

Agreed, but will things be any better under a tory government? I doubt it. The government will always do things to try to please the voter, and the percentage of votes by motorcyclists is never going to worry them.

True, but car drivers are being shafted just as much as the motorcyclist...
