 |
|
So I'm hungry to buy a new bike within the next week, after searching relentlessly it seems my ideal bike, the GSXR750, is way overpriced throughout the market.
With that in mind I started looking at other bikes, and came across this Honda Fireblade:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201131408482030/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/seller-type/trade_adverts/cc-from/800cc/price-from/1000/model/cbr/make/honda/radius/100/page/1/postcode/b152lw?logcode=p
1998, 16k miles, but mentions that it was listed as Cat C in 2008, so I am assuming that since it has an MOT till May 2012 that it's been restored/repaired and is in good working condition. I'll have to wait till Tuesday to call them up and ask what was wrong with it as they don't mention this in the advert, but I'm guessing it was just cosmetic, though I don't think there's anything obvious.
So, firstly, is that a decent price for that age/miles/condition? (As it would appear my idea of a good price is way off!).
Secondly, just to clarify, a Cat C I don't have to mention on insurance? And shouldn't cost me anymore on insurance right?
Thanks,

For the last few weeks I have also been looking like a mad man for the perfect bike in £1500 price range.
I've been looking at blades, GSXR750's, ZX9's and ZX7's. I've test rode a few ZX9's now and im sold on it. 1998-on and you cant go wrong.
Been watching loads on ebay, look at this one, reserve not met, 2000 plate, 18k £1550 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250878058451?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
Thats no money for a bike like that, spoke to the seller and wanted £1800 |

It seems like an honest bike at an honest price. If you can establish what sort of accident it was in in order to ascertain the damage. My 929 blade was a CAT C when it was lowsided by the previous owner in 05. LHS needed repairing when I asked him. What I didn't know was that the crankcase took a knock and had to be weld repaired and only found that out when I replaced the generator.
At that sort of mileage, ask when the valves were last checked however. "Some Service History" ought to cover recent services, and at 16k, valves would have definitely needed a looking at. If not, use it as a bargaining chip. If you have a mechanically competent friend, then an afternoon with the rocker cover off and feeler gauges should let you know if you need your shims replacing. It should be about £200 at an independent with an oil and filter change.
Remus can is a bonus - baffles are in so it's road legal. But they are sturdy and very well made (I got a Titanium remus innovation on my 929).
Hetzer used to have a 918 blade so he might be able to fill you on on the niggles and nuances.
Price is about right for a 98 superbike class - once you get beyond a certain time period, depreciation's already gone, and the effect of it being a CAT C doesn't make a bit of difference to price - mileage and condition, however, does.
And no, you don't need to tell insurers that the bike is a CAT C. ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1

Don't forget the idle throttle cable!
That I'm writing this post tells you I made it home without fault, or police intervention for that matter (bitch at the post office wouldn't sell me a tax disc without the full printed out papers).
The bikes a beaut, smooth as anything at 90 on the motorway, could easily feel that it wasn't even straining at that speed and had plenty more left in her, if anything it seemed to be less smooth at 50/60 and insisted on going faster. Well happy with it though mate so cheers
