On sunday i bought my first bike a zx6r ( 2005 636 model) when i bought the the bike i only received two black keys and up untill an hour ago i didnt see a problem with this. however my dad says i should have also got a red key for the immobilizer. ive phoned the previous owner and he says when he bought the bike they are the only 2 keys he was given. How important is the red key and what does it do? if my battery goes flat will i not get the bike started again without the red key? It took me a long time and a lot of overtime to buy this bike have i basically bought a lemon?

The red key is to do with the KISS system. You need to get it. Possible to get one through a dealer, but they'll probably charge the earth and be very suspicious...

Does your barrel have a red ring around it with KISS written on it?

If yes you have KISS fitted, and need the red key. If not then KISS isn't fitted and it's probably an import. IIRC KISS was standard fitment on UK bikes.

KISS = Kawasaki Immobiliser Security System.

You can run it fine without the red key, but if you lose both of the black ones you're fooked. I'd be deeply suspicious of anyone selling one without a red key. The red key is coded to the cdi, so you need a new cdi to get a new key. Lots of money.

In short I'd take it back, or get the previous owner to foot the bill for a new CDI, red key and lockset.

I have a guide for coding new Hiss/kiss without needing the red key or a dealer I'll post up if you need it. The easy answer is not to lose your keys.

My sister only got 1 black key with hr 03 636 but I'm not sure if that model had the KISS on it anyway? Never been a problem if it has got it.

ballocks getting the seller involved,is it fair then to say the owner of the bike now has to have these parts fitted or replaced before he can sell it and if and when he comes to sell it later on he is responsible for having it sorted if the next buyer moans after hes bought and paid for it ?

Bottom line is he hadnt checked when he purchased it and will have to either foot the bill or, well i dont know tbh what else he can do other than some magical magicianary electrical skills to bypass the imobilizer and fit a secret switch.

Hope its not too expensive though.

Adam.

Would this guide also help in the coding of a new black key? or does anyone know about this, I lost my spare black key while on my way home from europe.. so now only have 1 key and knowing how useless I am ill prob loose it and just be left with the red key!

Reading round the net its supposed to be mega expensive to get a new coded black key?

I agree with you Devo it is my fault for not asking about the red key while viewing the bike, but if im honest i didn't know bikes came with one. I rang the previous owner who said he also doesn't know about the red key and only got the two black ones when he bought the bike in 2010, seems a genuine guy so i belive him. while ever i've got two keys im not too worried about not having the red key if however i manage to loose one i've found this guy https://www.ecu-master.co.uk might be some use to you too Oz.

Consider yourself lucky. Mine came with 1 key only.

When you've lost both of the black ones.
