Its a Nissan Primera 2.0

After about 2-3 minutes of running the car starts to sound like its an old diesel van.

So i checked the oil, as i checked it a little drips from the stick onto the exhaust manifold cover.

It turns to smoke instantly, its absolutely red hot.

Trouble is the temp guage in the car says the temp is normal (right in the middle).

Could this perhaps be pre-ignition, what could cause this.

BTW i picked the car up the other day, it cost me £400.
Im doing an Ebay car challenge round Europe for under 500 quid cars.

It appears ive already bought a dud lol.

But any help would be greatly aappreciated

Hi

Exhaust probably should be VERY hot on anything vaguely new to get the cat hot quickly. Possibly there is a missing heat shield from around the exhaust.

For the engine to heat the exhaust up would suggest either a very lean mixture (possible) or cam timing out (possibly might explain the diesel noise, but probably run like a dog). Ignition timing might do it as well, but again I would expect it to run badly.

To be honest my main guess would be a knackered and blocked up catalytic converter.

All the best

Keith

Hi

O2 sensor can affect the mixture, but probably not from cold (it is probably ignored for the first few minutes). Wouldn't expect it to cause the exhaust to be unusually hot that quickly from a cold start.

Not sure of any tricks to check the cat.

All the best

Keith

When you say it's red hot, you mean it's literally glowing red with heat? Surprised

Good luck getting round Europe Very Happy

Has it got variable valve timing?

I only ask as our renault developed a faulty dephaser pulley and sounded like a diesel at idle.

No idea why it would cause it to run hot though if that is the problem..

I dont believe it has VVT,

I assume you are refering to something simular like you get on the Alfas in the late 90s early 00s with the VVT rattle ?

it dead strange, it only starts to sound rough when the exhaust manifold cover is hot enough to evaporate oil instantly.

The top of the radiatior gets pretty hot too.

I thought it may be the water pump, but that would show up if the temp guage rose in the car, which it dont.

Though if the car was running VERY lean, id imaging that /could make the manifold v.hot.

Surely a rich mixture would make it run colder.

at operational temp the manifold of any car is going to burn the oil off straight away Dave.

Had a few issues with blocked cats and if there's no issue with power loss then I wouldn't say it was a blocked cat, the oil would burn off the manifold after its warmed up in no time.

There isnt really an issue with power, its a really nice smooth car to drive.

Apart from it sounding like a bag of spanners or an 1980s Diesel.

I was perhaps thinking, after lifting the oil cap although the oil in there is fresh, at some point the oil had sat in there for ages, as there are sludgy deposits.

Could there be a blocked oil passage, perhaps restricting oil to the head ?

ALSO oil appears to be fairly overfilled, maybe by around 25%+

Could this affect crack pressure enough to do this ?

Hi

Over full oil would likely pop out of the breather and be burnt by the engine (a cat stops that from being really noticeable), although if full enough / revved enough it will blew seals in the engine.

One thought, is the oil the right grade? Too thick oil doesn't work well with hydraulic tappets and can cause them to pump up. Which might mean the exhaust valves staying open a touch and odd noises.

All the best

Keith

Older Primera's had cam chains- could be the tensioner-either no oil pressure or broken up with would cause a rattling noise. Can you take a vid of it running?

yea, that i can do.

Ill try get there out there tomorrow.

But to explain it.

Starting from cold....

Really loud at startup, then quiets down.

after gets upto operating temp, it consistantly sounds like a diesel, more noticable at idle, gets quieter as you rev, but its still there.

But it drives quite well, no adverse MPG that ive noticed as of yet either.

Yeah, not too clear in the vid, but reckon its chain. I see you have a VTR, so same applies to the Primera with regards to camchain tensioners...!! In this pic you can see the parts- if the tensioner is gone the chain will flap about...

Nah its not a VTR, thats just a primera i found on youtube with a simular problem.

ITs a 2.0 SE with the SR20De engine.

But yea, it could be right.

Is there any simple way i can fix this myself, or taking it to a garage and it costing less than £150.

I mean the car only cost £400, so im not splitting hairs over it, if its too expensive, ill just drive till she blows.

I meant a Honda VTR Laughing Just did tensioners and chains on one of these a few weeks back...

Less than £150- no chance. The kit is £100+. Its quite a big job, maybe a 5 spanner job in Haynes.....

arrrr she blows Smile

Now i havent heard of a CC snapping, so im hoping this is just going to be all noise no trousers.

I did however have my Cam belt snap on my Audi TT

Talking of bike cam chain rattles, the only rattle i had was on the CBR600RR, it was only 3 years old at the time.
Worst build quality out of all my bikes that one.

I've seen a few Nissan's, especially little Micra's, snapping chains... 3 Cyl Corsas are prone to it too- listen to one the next time you see one on the road...

As for Honda bikes.. well I just don't get on with them, and any one I've had has been troublesome.

Cam belt snap on a TT... ouch. wasn't the crazy plastic water pump that did it was it?
