PostPosted: 21:28 - 24 Sep 2011    Post subject: Rear wheel shifted to the left Reply with quote

After having a bad experience (financially) with repairing a dragging clutch, I'm looking into another problem before I head down to a garage (if need be). I've been riding this bike now for around a month but the rear wheel looks slightly 'off'. I've had a few people glance at it and they notice it but say it shouldn't be anything to worry about.

From what I've read online its either a slightly bent/twisted subframe or the fairings aren't sitting properly. I aligned the wheels together and don't get any wobble when moving. However, if I ride with no hands on the bars, the bike drags right very slowly.

Any helpful suggestions are very appreciated. If it is a garage job, I don't want them telling me its something its not.

Razz

Have you checked the markers on the nuts?

A more accurate measure is from the centre of the nut to the pivot point on the swinging arm...
Other than that I can't suggest much else :/

To me your tank looks inline with your rear wheel.

Bent subframe?

When was the rear wheel off last? it looks like maybe the spacers where put in wrong.

Hi

If the wheel is out of life within the swinging arm then I would agree with Chris. Spacer between the sprocket carrier and the wheel is quite often lost and it often won't cause an immediate problem. However it causes a massive side load on the sprocket carrier bearing that will then likely fail and collapse. Might take a good few hundred miles.

All the best

Keith

I took the bike down to a Honda dealership and repair shop to see what they thought of it. It didn't really help tbh, they rode it around and said it was fine but acknowledged it did look right. Everyone I show seems to be completely stumped.

In regards to the above comments, The rear wheel seems to be inline with the swing arm. The swing arm seems to be the thing thats moved/bent. What are my options? Sad

Where are you?

I can only presume worthing, going by the dealer on the plate.

If you fancy a ride to Salisbury (70 miles) we can pull the wheel out and check the bearings and spacers against a parts diagram to make sure they are all there and in order.

It'll cost you 100% less than the dealer price

Thanks for the reply and offer but I'm living in Newcastle at the moment Sad

The bikes gone through 5 owners now, so has travelled the country a bit.

I've also noticed a small rattling sound coming from the back wheel when it drops from kerbs or goes over cobbled roads. Going to have to sort it out.

Could be the spacers are swapped around. If the wheel spindle spacer on the right is longer than the one on the left, chances are they are reversed.

Can you get a long straightedge on from rear to front sprocket, to have a look at the chain run?
Looks like spacers to me too.

Mine is an 02 CG and I noticed this as well months ago. It had done 9500 miles when I got mine and has been quite clearly dropped. I thought that the wheels were not aligned but I checked the rear to the swing arm and and then looked more closely to see if the 2 wheels are in the same plane and they are. I also have no idea what it is but I haven't had a problem regarding it yet and I've done over 5000 miles on it.

I've had the rear wheel off a couple of times and swapped the spacers around but that isn't it. Has yours been dropped?

I'm completely stumped too.

Righto, Ill see if I can find something.

Seems like you're in the same boat as me MattJ. It looks like the whole swing arm is pointing to the left. I haven't dropped it since I got it but its had 4 previous owners Sad

At the end of the day if it rides straight and doesn't wear the tyres funny you could just stop worrying and ride it.

+1

That's what I've done and I've had no problems. I'd like to know why though just to satisfy my own curiosity.

Looks to me as if the spacers have been put back on the wrong side. Shocked

Edit: looks like not the only one, serves my right for skimming through the thread.
