You can re-bike a frame but re-framing a bike is more tricky. The identity of the bike is in fact the identity of the frame.

Hope that makes sense.

strictly speaking you cant do it because your using more than 75% or whatever % of another bike but in reality they cant proove that so just say you bought an engine and changed numbers with dvla

Err... No it wasn't before you go saying shit like that.

New frame with V5 and reg number, sent the V5 off to the DVLA to get the engine numbers swapped.
It was a legit bike.

As above, I've reframed a bike before. The identity is with the frame, so as long as you keep the v5 for the frame, and the finished bike becomes the frame's reg.

Then send off the v5 with the new engine number, job's a goodun.

Well you can't re-use any parts off of a Cat A bike (the whole thing must be crushed), and with Cat B you can only re-use serviceable, non-structural parts. Counts out things like subframes, swingarms, front ends etc.

Hi

Insurance categories is a strange area. It appears that the categories are assigned by the insurance companies with an attempt to make it seem like they are legally binding. However it appears that VOSA will often do a VIC check on a cat a or b vehicle which it will likely pass as it is mainly checking the id (ie, that it isn't a stolen car being given the write offs identity), and once that is done the DVLA will accept it.

Doesn't appear to be any legal backing behind what parts (if any) from a write off can't be reused.

All the best

Keith
