Hell we get a lot of spam these days often created from very new accounts.
Idea

How about we copy b3ta and have something called rookie tuedays or whatever day. Whereby when you sign up it doesn't approve your account till the following Tuesday.

Said spammer, robot or human needs to wait a week tops to post and in theory has moved onto the next spam target rather than waiting us out.

Question

Then even the humans will get bored and move on.

No great loss really but one lost member could be the new Keith or teflon Mike (not that we'd ever want to replace them)

Just ban gmail and see the spamming fall, fast and by lots

It makes work for the mods/admin, but some forums make the first 10 or even 25 posts moderated so they can't be seen until approved.
Or you can have all new members wait until a judgement is made by a human based on location and inappropriate user names like asdfg which many spambots favour.

Hi

Bots can probably be stopped fairly easily with a bit of extra customisation.

People signing up are more of a problem. Having the first 1~2 posts moderated might be an idea. Not keen on stopping posts for the first week (that would pretty much kill off any new members).

One useful function for the mods would be a list of all the posts rated as spam to make them easy to find. 90% would probably be new posters looking for a ban, and most of the rest would be dubious ratings.

All the best

Keith

Well, only kind of.

In general people who can't be bothered to return are not in general going to be a loss but there could be 'the one'

I think a mod or 2 should have the power to ban. I know it goes against BCF's free speech policy but just for the ones who are obviously spammers who join and make one or 2 posts obviously spamming their products.

We do. I have banned 2 spammers so far today, and deleted 5~6 spam posts.

All the best

I disagree, there are far too many other free email services and new ones popping up all the time for banning them to be a viable solution.

That and some people ONLY have a gmail address, as not all ISP's give you an email address...

After getting fed up with the constant stream of spammers i banned all gmail addresses.
This didn't effect current members and we noe get spam once ever week or so instead of several every day.
There are plenty of other free mail addresses potential members can use.

I've had people moaning they don't want 'all the trouble' of having to register another email address but are quite happy for me and my mods to spend hours a week dealing with the spam

There are other things that have been introduced over time like making every single person make their first post in the welcome section before becoming a full member and able to make posts and reply to any other threads

Banning new gmail memberships has been by far the singular most effective way to stop spam and wish i'd done it yeas ago

Hi

I have a couple of forums and some changes to the registration script has pretty much stopped all the spammers. Went from dozens a day to about 1 a year without banning gmail (OK, mail.ru and a few others are blocked, but that had little effect before the other changes).

All the best

Keith

Would an inability to post links until you've amassed 10/20/30/whatever posts work, or is that already in place?

Hi

Nice idea, but not sure that would be that easy to do (when posting phpBB doesn't care too much about the links, etc, they are translated when the post is displayed).

Also given the garbage links in some of the spam posts I am not sure the spammers care too much about correctly formed links.

All the best

I don't think bcf particularly has a spam problem.

If people just marked as spam instead of replying to it and pushing it back up to the top, it would be even less apparent.

Maybe auto ban after a certain amount of 'Spam' ratings. If the person gets banned then a message asking them to PM a mod to be unbanned if they are a genuine poster?

I've added filtering by rating type to the topic filter in viewall / viewtopic, hopefully that'll help:

e.g. https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewall.php?type=spam

Hi

Thankyou.

EDIT - although it seems to highlight threads which have had (I presume) deleted spam posts in them (eg https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=230430 )

All the best

Links going to an 'approval list' would be nice; though often it seems they forget the links; or they're just adding a website in their profile, etc.

I still want a 'worm' option to remove all of a user's posts in one click (or at least hide them, for one you click on the wrong user Smile ).

Does the ACP not have the option to delete all user posts when you delete/ban them?

Hi

Standard phpBB 2 doesn't. There are mods to allow this (and I installed it on one board I run), but the possibility of a cock up worries me a bit.

All the best

The problem with the "one-button-nuke" approach is that there isn't an easy way to undo if you cock up / get hacked, whereas banning somebody hides their posts but is undo-able.

It should probably also hide threads created by that person that have zero replies.

Yes please Smile.

I think there's a question of whether it's ok to have a load of hidden spam or not - it irks me, but if generally people are happy with it, I'm quite happy to just click 'ban'.

Oh and I need to know if you're coming to minimoto and karting Wink \/.

I know this is making it awkward but couldn't you make it so if Kickstart and G ban them, then they get removed completely?

It'd be nice if there was a separate post-state or something that puts them in limbo for a while.

Ie as well as checking to see if they're banned and hiding their post, it checks to see if their wormed and doesn't display anything at all.

However, a long time since I've looked in to how phpbb works.
