Does anyone know what sizes the above nuts are?? I need to get some sockets to fit. Confused

Also where is the best place to get sockets of this obscene size?

Thanks in advance.

Halfords have quite a few individual sockets, may even had the right size if you are luckey. If you ask nicely they will let you try them, to find the right size before you commit to one.

So either spin the nut off and bring it down or ride the beastie along. Cool

*EDIT* Or measure them. Doh! Laughing

3 problems there, 1: it is a race bike (so can't be ridden on the road) 2: Obviously currently I have no means to get the nut off!! Laughing and 3: I don't have the bike at the mo, but need the socket for Thursday when I do!!! Smile

The rear is a good 46mm or possibly a bit more!!! do Helfords stock sockets of that size then??

The back wheel nut is a 46mm. Not too sure about the front.

My boss bought a 748 2 weeks ago. He just put some 207RR's on it to get rid of the crap lego tyres it came with, and didn't fancy using an adjustable spanner, so he measured it at 46mm and then just rang our tool supplier who supplied a 46mm socket.

I doubt you will get a 46mm in 1/2" variety, I think that size only comes in 3/4" and 1" (of course all you need is an adapter to use it with a 1/2" breaker bar/ratchet) they do them on www.primetools.co.uk for about £20 I think Smile

Phone up see if they have them in stock and what size drives they are. I would have thought a 46 would be 1/2", but i suppose it could be 3/8ths. Halfords have adaptors also if you need them. Should have breaker bars as well.

Phone up and you will find out. Thumbs Up

Remember you ned to torque them up afterwards, but you probably already know that. Wink

Thanks guys Thumbs Up

I have a 1/2" and 3/8" socket set, if i can get one to fit them, that is preferable, else, yeah have to get an adaptor.

I have looked on Helfords website but i have to say, well I am none the wiser!! Evil or Very Mad

I'll give them a phone in the AM.

You can't get as much force with a spanner as you can with a ratchet.

this would be 3ft long, and you can give a ring spanner a wack with a hammer which you can,t with a ratchet (it would break the bearings) but l do perfear 1/2" sockets when theres room to get a big tommy bar on (4 foot tube for levered)

Spanners only have the amount of leverage that equals the length of the spanner itself. A ratchet however can easily have a fork leg placed over the end and more leverage is given straight away. Or failing that, a brake bar. You can put a fork leg or similar on the end of a spanner, but I don't like to. Ratchets r0x0r Razz

Yeah but you need to torque it back up, so spanners are not so good.

Univeral spanners are ok for taking off the nuts. But you need the socket to torq it back up.
