seams all modern vans have there faults personly tho ide go for a sprinter
main fault with a sprinter is ring of death ,copper washer under the injectors leak creating carbon ring build up when you try to remove injector they snap in the head so any sooty or tar like build up round the injectors walk away

modern transits suffer with duel mass clutches and constanly needing the injectors reprogramming
renaults, vauxhall, citroen all share same problems with injectors

iveco are very underrated with there only fault being the rear brakes lock 1st when empty cure is to carry more lol

I had a bit bigger budget and ended up with a Vito Mk2 - was also considering a T5.

Unfortunately your budget will only stretch to the Mk1 Vito and T4, but both should still be pretty good on fuel.

3 bikes will be a struggle - should be ok for dirt bikes, but tight for others (which a swb transit you can get 3 sports bikes in ok).
But being that bit narrower also makes them a chunk less hassle for general 'daily' stuff - ie car parks etc.

you would pick up an half decent toyota hiace for that, mega reliable, but not as economical as the VWs and Trafic clones.

Providing it's under the appropriate weight (tad under 2t unladen I think), consider a crew cab - it's then allowed to do 70mph on A roads; while a normal front-seat-only van or one with a crew cab but over 2t is a 60mph speed limit for a de-limited dual carriageway.

Not the biggest by a fair bit.
Sprinter/LT35 and Iveco are both bigger in LWB and also come in XLWB. All are 4m load area in LWB and the Iveco is 4.5m in XLWB, while the other two are 4.2m I think.

I don't think you can get them really long in 3.5t, but the older style Mercs came in absolutely massive versions for the 6t ones.

looked at sprinters and the daily's and they are not as wide, which does make a difference, I had forgotten about the xlwb ones though as they are rare as if your after paying less than 2500 for one

I've managed to get my 3.6m wood in from B&Q Smile

I've had both a LWB LT35 and a LWB LDV.
Also test driven an XLWB and LWB Iveco; as well as a decent variety of other vans.

I wouldn't say the LDV was noticeably wider than the LT35 and definitely not that the Iveco; but both definitely had a fair bit bigger total load area.

Personally, MK5(?) new old Transit
Ours is a 51 plate it has cost us a battery and a new injector pump, just clock over 150k miles.

I like Sprinters and Vitos but they don't half rust, most of the MK1 Vitos are dead or being bodged together, the metal in them is piss poor think up to like 2005 before they finally galved the bodies, Sprinter the same

Our 51 plate Transits has two bits of rust, drivers wing which is original and the passenger wing which is a cheap pattern part, the rest is solid

Our 53 plate Transit not a spec of rust

Our 51 plate Iveco has surface rust due to chipped paint in a few areas, but nothing like Merc rust.

I just couldn't buy a Sprinter or Vito with the known rust issues and the injector issues.

That said if you go for a Transit and you see the injector pump is leaking diesel it will be around £500+ to replace, so check where it has been parked and get your head under the front bumper and look for signs of diesel there, the leak can change each time you stop, and only leak when the van is stopped for some reason, at one point the one on mine was pissing diesel out (thankfully on the old dirt car park in work)

we hired a merc sprinter camper here in nz,
it was double the weight of my delica,
it was faster to 60mph
had a higher top speed,
and used less gas

far more economical than the transit work van i had as well.

my money would be on the merc or the equic vw with the same 2.5 diesel turbo motor,

You taking the piss? The LDV Convoy is the worst van I have ever had the misfortune of having, 2 years i had that piece of crap. There're noisy, the windscreens leak badly, even after having the rubber replaced twice (that cost more than the glass), you could fit a yellow pages in the door shuts and they are very slow. It was only 5 years old.

I've also had a 2007 Merc Vito that I loved.

A 2007 VW Crafter, you proberbly saw this van a few times we went out- masive inside, I could ride my bike straight in the back.

I'm now on to a 2011 VW Transported, me and Blue got both bikes in with ease, plus all our gear and my Sortimo was still fitted in the van.

These may all seem out of budget but i bought one of my old company vans 6 months ago for 3k, it was a 2006 Transporter with 160k on the clock, full history, one owner ect. It needed new brakes for the MOT and the EML light was on but it was still a bargin price.

We let a 55 plate WV LT35 go for £1700 last year.

There are some bargins to be had if you know where to look. First place I would ask is anybody you know who works for a firm that run a decent fleet of vans that own them. All ours go to auction and make pennies anyway, so if anyone at work wants them, they can buy it for the average CAP. They sold my old man a 56 plate Passat for £2700 a few months ago.

I don't think we have got anything at the mo but I can check if anything is due to go to auction

The vito (like sprinters) rot. Just because it has a mercedes badge on the bonnet don't expect decent build quality! I've driven two sprinters regularly and test drove a vito. The sprinters had the big lumps and went well, the vito was a 108 and felt like a LDV Laughing The load space in the older vito is disappointing. Not had a go in the latest vito.

I was looking at T4 transporters simply because they appealed to my tarty side. In all honesty they are out of date now, the design is old and they have too many niggles. They also carry an inflated price tag as people want them for surf vans or campers, VW scene tax Rolling Eyes

You will probably come across lots of cheap vauxhall vivaros/renault traffics, nice vans but they have chocolate gearboxes.

I run a LWB hi-ace, its got the D4D TD engine. Quite simply the best van of this size. Very solid and reliable workhorses. I use mine for work and don't run a car anymore as it drives like one anyway Smile

The Vitos do rot, especially the white ones (mine is white) - they're made in Spain not Germany, which may explain some things.

My vito is a 111 and as stock it's 'ok', but with a 'chip' it's not bad at all - I really wanted the 115, which when chipped is pretty good.

Driven a lot of vans over the last few months, transit, sprinter, LDV, but suprisingly the best has been a Renault traffic, quiet good seat with fold down armrest, fast and torquey with cruise control and about 34mpg.
Must be reliable, last one had 350,000+ miles on it and still went well.
