New Tyres, well impressed!

For years I have been a devout Bridgestone user, although due to circumstances beyond my control, for the last 18 months I have been using a set of Dunplop 205's They are bloody awfull.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I had a free set of Avon Azzaro's delivered and I managed to get around to getting them fitted today. First impressions? Well, it has transformed the bike! It tracks as straight as a dye, the steering is now light and responsive, and although I have only done a few miles on them (and that was in the damp) they already feel as if they are sticking to the road like sh1t on the preverbial blanket.

Time will tell, but in my experience first impressions count for a lot, and the last time I used Avon's was back in the late 80's and I wasn't over impressed with them then, but times move on.

When I have a few more miles under my belt, I will let you know how I am getting on!

I have been well impressed with both the SP and ST on my ZX12

I always run a SP front but when I recently punctured a SP rear I went to an ST

now I know people who can get over 5000 miles out of these on busas but the grip and feel seems exceptional for a supposed "touring" tyre

I rode 300 miles round the twisties of southern Scotland on wet and dry roads and never had a moment where I thought these tyres are not confidence inspiring

well I did but it was after riding around the outside of a car in the pouring rain (superb visibility around the corner) and the front twitched crossing the white line but only to be expected I suppose

yes, I am now and Avon fan and at £130 FOR A PAIR - who can complain?

very personal thing though tyres

i binned my R6 very early on, i felt the front let go, and they were avons, thusly i have been put off them for life, always seen them as a kind of lower tier tyre manufacturer

but you guys seem to be impressed

plus my SP pair went over 198mph

and my SP/ST combo have done over 197mph


so I can vouch for their high speed stability

I had Avons on my Blade when I got it. Absolutely awful tyres, slippy at best when hot, in the wet I was scared to go over 40. Couldn't wait to get my 207rr's on.
Glad they've got their act sorted.

I had Avon azaro SP pro extreme on my R1. Fantastic tyres with no grip or stability issues at all.

Only got 1900 miles out of the rear though, but it was ridden fairly hard.

Also had SP's on the GOOSE. Inspired confidence and could knee down about 400 meters down the road with out having to warm up the tires to get grip.

Loved that bike. Would love to get my hands on another one.

I currently have SP's on the GSXR, they are good tyres, they just really aren't that flickable if your trying to go from left to right or something, feels like I have to force them over a lot but on the whole I've had no problems with them. I did have a little rear end slide when I was scrubbing them in though.

Wheelies really well with two people on it. Power wheelies of first. Unfortunetly i've got a top speed of 10mph in first. Damn...

I got a Dunlop K530 on the back of the GPZ, doesn't grip well at all, It slides in the dry so I'd hate to think what'd be like in a down pour.

Just had a BT45 replace the front Dunlop and its bloody lovely, sticks to the road like glue!
Going to get a rear BT45 when I get paid soon .

Well, I got about 300 miles in yesterday, and once they were scrubbed in, I have to say that I was very impressed with the way they behaved. The ride was very compliant, far better than on the Dunlops, grip was superb, and the bike is far more flickable through the twisties, so by and large I am well happy with them, it will now be a case of seeing how they last.

The worst I have ever got out of a set of new tyres are 500 miles from a set of Pirelli Corsa's and the Dunlops I have just removed have probably given me the longest wear of about 12,000 miles (and even then they had plenty of meat on them), so time will tell.

Trouble with tyres is that it is a very personal thing, for example I can't stand Metzeler's or Continental's, whilst others will rave about them, so whilst it has been interesting reading the comments of those who have used the Avon's, I guess it all comes down to personal taste!

Ive just started riding bigger bikes and when i got my cbr600 it had an avon on the back (whoever had it beofre me didnt care enough to get a matching set ) But i thought the avon was awful, it just seemed to squirm and give up on me all the time. I wa waiting for payday to get a new set of shoes but a nail beat me to it and killed the AVON. Now ive got Bridgestones BT014's fore and aft and ive got every confidence in them.

Just goes to show how personal a tire choice can be, i used to run dunlops on my RS125 and other people said they were crap but they never give me a moments discomfort. strange.
