First off, he seems to be a triker, not a biker.

So far it doesn't seem to explain why people ride bikes for charity.
Why not just give the money straight to charity?

However, if it prevents people from making annoying drawn out videos like that, I'm all for it Thumbs Up.

As G said, I'd prefer to just give to the charity (currently giving cancer research and childrens hospice some money)

Cancer is shit, I'd rather just donate a little each month to help a cause rather than pay someone to ride drive his "bike" thinking he is doing something good when the petrol money he would use could just be donated Rolling Eyes

So what about toy-runs etc, especially at x-mass.... doesn't matter how you do it anything that raises awareness and generates money is ALL GOOD!

Alot of "Bikers" like to ride, they will go for a spin when the weather/time is good. But an organised ride is different and very enjoyable... So instead of going on a run with your mates, you get them together and join a charity run (pay a £5 to take part).... You get your ride and they get thier cash!!!

On your argument why don't you save petrol, try selling your bike and giving all the cash to said charities!!!

This video has a point - its a sad story by a very popular and well know youtube personality... It highlights the good work medical staff and charities do and thanks them for the heart breaking work they do!!!

How much will be donated to these hospitals/charities because of this one 17 minute video?

Toy runs, I donate to childrens charity...hopefully they see part of that, I need not go on a toy run

Riding alone is far more rewarding than riding in a group, I like my own pace. Riding is fun, organisation is not fun, paying to not have fun is ludicrous

On your argument why don't you save petrol, try selling your bike and giving all the cash to said charities!!!

If I have a really bad accident and end up with my legs broken and never able to ride, I'll sell my bike and donate to the air ambulance that more than likely saved my arse, what I won't do is sell my mode of transport, no charity would want you to stop working as you wouldn't be able to give donations Wink

This video has a point - its a sad story by a very popular and well know youtube personality... It highlights the good work medical staff and charities do and thanks them for the heart breaking work they do!!!

Its a video based around money... sad story, yes. Cancer is bad, I hated it, I can see why it ruins lives...hence the donations, but I do that out of choice, not paying to ride slowly with a large group

How much will be donated to these hospitals/charities because of this one 17 minute video?

No idea, but instead of spending the £15 petrol and the £5 entry or something that would mean a rideout with some form of organisation... just donate the £20

In my eyes, charity is charity, give if you want to, don't give if you dont. I'll give as the 2 I mention mean something to me.

When I go on a toy run, I'm doing it largely because I enjoy it.

Nothing to do with raising awareness or money, more just doing something that's fun and the kids get a kick out of too. The kids get a present, I get a day out, its a good laugh. 'Charity' doesn't really enter into it, in my mind.

If you're serious about helping charities, do this.

What exactly is the point? It was so boring I skipped to the end after a few minutes. No idea who he is, but he doesn't seem to have personality!
Thus it failed to highlight any 'good work'.

Don't see why I would pay to ride a bike slowly. I've got a car if I want to get stuck in a traffic jam.

So by your logic, the toy run as a charity event has worked. If it wasn't run for charity would it even have existed?

Not on the scale you see them in mags!!!

It gets you oof your arse and doing something for good!

I have not watched the clip but I bet it is an American guy that owns a big V twin tractor.
I ride because I want to or need to, I do not do it to raise cash to justify it.
I am not anti charity, working in a school I got fleeced every week by the kids for some cause or another. We all give in our own way (or not, your choice) but being paid to do what you enjoy and do anyway is not how I live my life.

Well they'll get f.a. extra from me - I couldn't take more than about a minute, skipped through to see if he did anything other than sit on the trike and speak at me. He didn't, so I turned it off.

None of the ones I've been on are really pitched as 'charity'. You're welcome to turn up and ride without donating anything if you want to.

My usual point stands - if you're doing something 'for charity' and expecting people to give you money for doing it, it should be something hard or unpleasant. Too much 'sponsor me to do something I like' around these days.

Gaybear-on-a-trike, preachy and boring as hell. If I watched more than 30 seconds it would doubtless put me off doing chaaaaridy runs more than anything except perhaps some chap going off on a guilt-trip rant on an intartubes forum.

It just doesn't work for "sponsor my jolly" chuggings. Go on, keep hammering away and see how much goodwill you generate.

Jump out of an Aeroplane, get sponsored, raise money for charity and have fun. WIN WIN?

Has to be.

Do a toy run, get toys/sponsors and have fun. WIN WIN?

Has to be.

End of the day, if the outlay is less than the Money raised for Charity then it's win win again!

If you don't like it, don't do it.

He's damn boring though Twisted Evil

Knock 'the product'? What, like often being organisations that pay the board millions of pounds?

Need a bit more definition on what "the product" is.

Before making any more comments on this thread, I think you should read this to get a better insight into "the point".

It depends on your morals. There is absolutely no way mine would allow me to ask my friends to pay for me to do something fun while they were under the money they were giving to charity.

Hai guys, I am looking to do a ride down to France sometime, and I need money to help me do it, I intend on using either a Ducati 848 or the new MV Agusta F3, so looking to raise money for the bike and the ride, and left overs to go to charity..... Laughing Laughing Laughing

I am not a charitable person per se, I wont give to big charities, change janglers, cold callers, people who leave those bags at your door can all knob off, my money goes direct to charities of my choice for services that actually need money and I know they will get the money and use it for themselves

Bloodbikes
Air ambulance
Coastguard people

They always get a change in their boxes on counters, most importantly I detest people who insist on ramming charity down your throats, being accosted in the street,

Most big charities the money collected goes towards running the place not the people who need it, speaking to someone the other day his boss a few years back quit his job as the top manager on good pay and took a job as head of a charity, next few months his repmobile had been changed for a top spec fully loaded Jag, sold his house and moved into a massive house, went from £34k a year to £120k a year I think he said.

Charity is a load of shit these days, the ones I support are the ones who don't put a smoke screen about where the money goes, I know that my Direct Debit for the Blood Bikes goes to towards their operating services, same with Air Ambulance.

The animal charities are the worst, "there are only 60 of the snow leopard tiger horse cats left in the world, with just £2 a month you can" Do what exactly? What is my money going to do? A breeding program? Are you buying rifles to actively hunt hunters? No, it is so you can go fuck about in the jungle.

If people want to give to charity, let them do it on their own accord, I see no reason to come on here and being self righteous about how you give to charity, and how it is a good cause, let us make our own choices and don't influence them, if we were interested in the video or the cause, then we would go look for it ourselves, but obviously we are not.

By the way do you have permission for that signature or are you spamming? Rolling Eyes

G, fair comment but it's not really a moral issue is it?

If I jump out of a plane for fun (never have, never will) BUT raise £1000 for 'Charidy' is it really a bad thing?

My friends don't have to sponsor if they don't wanna, I won't feel bad if they say "GTFO, I don't have the cash"

Na, let em get on with it, I say.
Not really anyone's business but the 'Charidy' guy and those that want to sponsor.

No big deal IMFO Wink

Do you say "The first £150 of the money goes to pay for me to have fun and any extra goes to charity", or do you say "sponsor me to jump out of a plane". For me, the latter is rather immoral, while the former is perfectly moral.

Then, it'd be nice if you said "I've checked up and this charity spends it's money like this....".
I won't give money away until I've got a good idea of what I'm buying. A lot of people are happy to easily give money to various commercial organisations on some charitable basis, while were they buying a £30 electronics product they'd spend a few hours researching the best one, etc.

No, I don't say anything.

If the Charity makes money and the guy having fun, has fun then the objective is served and everyone is happy.
I don't give much these days, especially to these fekers in the street who want my bank details.
I do give to certain others but it's VERY limited.

Its nice so many folks on here give to charity. Its five years this week since I lost my Dad to leukaemia. Whether you ride a bike, hold a cake stall or give direct to charity it all makes a real difference. I just find it sad in this day and age that charities have to do so much to help sick people but I sincerely thank God each day for people like you all. Merry Christmas Very Happy

Meh, I give to cancer charities cos I'm one of the lucky people who actually got over it, know of a few who are close to the family that haven't, so I'm grateful for that.

Childrens charities, I don't mind donating, its only £1.50 a month, but still I love kids, and those that dont have their families or are terminally ill are less fortunate in my eyes through no fault of their own.
