I might be picking a bike up on Monday that has no tax on it, with it being a bank holiday i can't tax it, so could i legally ride it home if it has insurance and a M.O.T?

You could always tax it online.

That said a lot of posties are now Indian blokes (or 1st generation sons and daughters of Indian blokes) and therefore bank holidays and UK Christian holidays mean absolutely nothing to them.

The post office about 200 yard from me was open on Christmas day and they do road tax IIRC.

This... I think it would be legal, as it is within 5 days of the end of the month...

I'd go to a post office but i wouldn't have an insurance document in time, looks like i'm gonna have to delay picking it up but not sure when i'll get time though.....

If you've got your insurance sorted, it will be on the online database used by the tax people.. They will also check the bike has MOT.

If you have both, you can do it online and get a few days grace with not showing the disc. I think however this only applies if you get the tax online before the first of the month, so you've got about an hour and a half... Wink

EDIT. If it were me, I'd ride it home, and take the risk.. but that's a different point to the one you raised.

Insured and MOT'd I would just take a punt and ride it home. If you are carrying all your docs and the receipt it would have to be a very miserable sod of a copper not to just let you on your way.

The biggest risk is that it might get impounded, but it's a very small one in the circumstances.

FFS Don't but it online. They only send it to the address on the V5, so unless they're a mate you aint getting the disk.

I'd just ride it, chances of being pulled are slim, just stick to back roads if you're really worried.

Probably not as you still don't have tax. If you buy it online then you print the email receipt.

A Cheque? No, not really Laughing

I would just ride it.
In fact, I did that for 35 miles after I bought my bike.

I had it insured, which is (imfo) the main thing and if you do get pulled well, you just argue the toss and say you can't buy it as there is no where open.

Sounds fair to me but probably not to the Police though Wink

As above, you probably will not get a pull and can buy it as soon as it's open or whatever.

I didn't see it as a big deal but then, I never got stopped.

If it's not taxed it will be recorded by APNR if the cunts are out and about or parked up and bullying non-criminals.

Tax it on-line if you have the documents.
It may be less hassle and it will start 01 Jan

It can take a good couple of days for the insurance to show up on the system. So you would probably not be able to tax it online until it does. If it's not on that system, then you may get pulled over for not showing as insured, which they'll then no doubt look at your tax disc?

Ride at your own peril I guess.

Has everyone else missed this point?

If you tax the bike online they will send it to the previous owners address.

A commonly held myth. You only get the 5 days of grace if you are renewing your tax online, not if applying for tax for the first time.

If you can't get tax from a Post Office then you can not legally ride it.

i dont bother putting in a tax disk, too much of a pain to unscrew all the little bolts. it's not an endorse-able offence not displaying one, but it's bad not to have it.
a few years back when i got pulled over (small number plate), policeman was starting to look over the bike and i said to him before he got to it. he wasn't bothered as it showed as taxed on the camera. think my disk is still september 08 thats on the bike.
and so on

Calendar Days.

DVLA doesn't work so Working Days is a bit redundant.

How far is it, and can you keep off main routes which may have static ANPR cameras fitted?

If he taxes it online the tax will get sent to the current registered keeper which is NOT the OP!!!

Well more a mis-remembering than a myth, but I take your point..

Like boundy and Marjay say though, the disc will get sent to the registered keeper. However by taxing it online, it will still be taxed, so you are unlikely to get stopped. Is there anything to stop you getting a replacement disc when the bike is registered to you (given that 125 tax is only £15 a year) ? Or even heaven forfend, asking that the seller post the disc to you when they get it.

FWIW I haven't got a tax disc holder on my bike, so consequently haven't displayed for 2 years. I would therefore only get a bollocking for failure to display rather than being untaxed.
