Lending a bike...

... Just looking for some views on lending a bike that you can't use for a year or so.

Since I've been banned and it'll be January 2013 before I can drive/ride again, I was playing with the idea of letting someone use my bike on the condition that they would pay for the maintenance/upkeep/tax/mot etc of it.

Would anyone here just give their bike to a friend or friend of a friend (or friend of a friend of a friend (or a complete stranger)), to ride around and look after to save it sitting in a garage gathering dust/rust.

Depends on the friend - some mates I'd happily lend my bike / cars, but others... no chance!

As a lender the best you can hope for is the bike back in the same condition you lent it in...

I dont see the point unless its a really good friend you want to help out.

Depending on the bike I'd probably sell it. One year less depreciation and it removes the temptation of "just nipping to the shops".

Depends how well you know this friend. A friend of mine lent me his GSXR after I had passed my test. I paid for the tax, he even signed the V5 doc over to me and I insured it fully comp. If anything did happen to the bike the insurance money would have went straight to him.

With the V5 in my name any tickets I would have gotten would have came to me.

6 months later I bought myself the VTR and a few months after that my mate came down with a van and picked the GSXR up again, I signed the doc back to him and all was well with the world.

But can you trust this person enough?

There are very few people I would trust with my bike and I have only lent it out on the condition that I have the other persons bike in exchange.

Would you let a mate shag your wife?

On the other hand I have borrowed bikes and, depending on what it is, you can get very attatched and a bit peeved when it's time to give it back.

Never in a month of Sundays. Either sell it, or lay it up properly for the year.

I have lent good friends my road legal track bike, but never my main one. And that is only friends wh have their own bike off the road & I know have insurance etc and need it just for a day or so.

Well..

I've loaned out my GT125, my GS500, my KH125, 2 of my CBR125s and my GSXR for more than a day as it were.

All but one came back damaged...if at all

The GSXR came back in the same condition.

The KH got stolen.

1 CBR got totalled into a roundabout.

1 CBR got impounded as owner had no insurance apparently

GS500 got dropped twice...dent on both sides of tank and no mirrors.

GT got dropped and broke clutch and brake levers.

In short, I will only loan to people that have full licences now

Just sell it, he will be adding extra miles to it for one which will lower the value aswell as more wear on the engine unless hes providing a new engine when you get it back?

Aswell as the fact it will probably get damaged, a lot happens in a year.

He could easily run up 5k miles + in a year.

So just sell it.

I think I would have to know the person very well, trust them and have been riding with them many times before I would even entertain the idea of lending my bike out. At the moment I can only think of two or three people that I would allow to ride the gixer but I wouldn't want to lend out it out longterm.

Personally I would either sell the bike full or lay it up for a while. Seeing as you have been banned for the best part of a year I would probably sell up and put that money into a bank account to buy a new bike when you can ride again.

Not directly related, but my mate was away on a skiing holiday and he asked that if I got a chance to get my bike out and run it up to temperature, I did his at the same time (they were garaged together).

His SV vibrated off it's side stand and the tank landed on my front caliper. I offered to get his tank repaired and resprayed professionally, he wanted a new tank.

Cost me £110 toward his new tank, for doing him a favour, and left both of us with a sour taste in our mouths - him for being 'out of pocket' and me for being expected to shell out for a new tank.

How good a mate is he? If it's only a year, buy yourself an optimate and do yourself and your mate a favour.

My friend 'gave' me his GS500 that I've been using for the past months. He bought a new bike, so was happy to just let me use it as long as I maintained it. I have done, fixing lots and keeping it going, and I have today sold it for him. So I didn't lose much money compared to running my own bike, and he got money for it that he wanted. He didn't have time to sell working around 60 hours a week at the time, so we both benefitted.

I definitely think it can work, and as long as you trust the person I don't see why not. Thankfully barely any of my friends ride, so they won't be asking to borrow a bike any time soon!

But that's cause I don't "know" many bikers. Therefore the majority of "anybody" are clueless non-bikers and thus why I don't let them near my bikes

it was just a thought, I had no one in mind, if it comes to it I'll just fill the tank and start it once a week or so, with the centre stand I can put it in gear and let it run for a few minutes.

Lend someone my bikes. Not a chance. If they wrecked them they couldn't live with the guilt - I'd make sure of it.

Park it up and get all those jobs done on it you never had time for. When it comes back out next year it'll be pristine and running like a dream.

There's only one person I trust to borrow my bike and he's the same with me. Personally if it were me I'd get shot of the bike and save the cash, you never know when you might need it even then you could always put it towards a new bike next year.
