Looking to pick up an R6, I Paid £3,000 back in 2006 for an early model, what should I be looking at paying in 2012 from a very early model to a late 2002?

Prices don't seem to have changed much but don't want to pay over again, was thinking £2,500.

I paid £2000 for my near mint 2001 plate with 22,000 on the clock in august. It had near full service history aswell but needed a new front tyre and new chain and sprockets.

about the same but I have 2002 model, fantastic bikes and capable enough for 99% of riders, though mine does now have nearly 40k miles on it as I do 300 miles commuting per week on it, and it has never had any real issues other than a bad coil when I bought it and a sticky rear caliper, but the caliper was just lack of servicing, and all sorted now.

Nice to know they can get to higher milages without to many problems with proper servicing. Will be using mine to commute again in the next few weeks. Mines due for the big 24,000 mile service which is expensive but im going to get it done.

Thanks guys.

Did you buy privately, if so where from?

Only real problem I've read about was the 2nd gear issue, which should be easily enough to check. I'll make sure to get the bike fully warmed up too.

I bought mine privately, it was advertised on pistonheads.com.

I was worried about the second gear issue aswell but aslong as you are aware of the problem its easy to spot apparently. Mine has been fine, bit clunky from 1st to 2nd but i think they are all like that.

Thanks

I can't remember if they had a fuel gauge or not? I never used the fuel tap, so I'm guessing they do have a petrol light?

No fuel gauge and no fuel tap, they have a fuel reserve light that comes on, and display switches to a reserve trip meter to count miles on fuel light.

I thought that was yours, recognized the ebay ID.

I've not owned a sportsbike for about 3 years now so I'm sure a 600 will do fine. Smile I know the 1000s are monsters and that puts me off, I like having much more usable power whilst being able to use all the gears. Razz

Never gonna change haha

Though i must say am tempted by the 2002 R1 you got for sale, but im not going to have any money for bikes untill May, and even then ill probably end up going for a V-twin again.

Creature of habit Smile

lol I am the offical R1 whore!

With the R6's if you end up with a carbed one thats those from 99-02, make sure you check that the recall work has been done.

This is shown by there being where the frame number is a punch hole mark at beginning of the first number/letter and also above probably the second or third number

dont really know much about the fuel injected ones

Personally I think you would be better off on a kwak 636 better midrange, even better GSXR600 K1-K3

I didnt really think much of my 00 R6, prefered my GSXR600 K1 at the time.

I've owned a 636, whilst they are great bikes I found it ridiculously uncomfortable & the front end was very twitchy. The seat must be a few degrees higher than the alternatives.

I could be tempted by a GSXR 750 if one came along.

My 636 is rather uncomfortable, a gsxr6 felt like an arm chair. I quite like the twitchyness but never (yet) found it a problem? Not as bad as the more modern R6's Shocked.

The carbed R6's were recalled to sort the possibility that the transmission may seize and affected the following Vin numbers RJ031-0000002 to 0009249

And also to fix the side stand switch may not function correctly and affected the following vin numbers RJ031-0000301 to RJ031-0029567

check out this link https://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.asp

and it will show various vehicles and the reason for recalls

I've been noticing the Red/White scheme 99-01's on Ebay for ~£1500+ within 75miles of me recently, and X/LukeVFR did a whole write-up thread on the 2nd gear change back when Half_Lyfe frequented the forum - it'll be in search. Thumbs Up
