Hi Guys.
My bike has been sat for around 12 months, i have started her up periodically to keep her going well while she has work done on her.
Now it MOT time and she is starting up, but misfiring quite abit on the front cylinder.

I know the plugs and leads are all fine, and im now putting it down to the fuel being about 12 months old and the fact she hasnt had a good thrashing round in so long.

Now... as theres only a small amount of fuel in the tank, shall i just fill her up with a high quality fuel like v-power and see if that plus a blast up the bypass will sort it out?

Or is there any good fuel additives i can use to give her a little lift?

The only time ive ever had issues with misfiring was when the main jets have been blocked a little, but before i set out removing everything to get to it i wanted to see if an additive or something would help clean it all out?

Any info would be great.

Im thinking of trying the Wurth Petrol Additive stuff, they do a bike one for 2 and 4 stroke enignes.

Looking at it tho... the bike ones are 150ml and the car ones are 300ml and i cant see them being any different to each other?

Says put 150ml into a tank of fuel.

The solution to pollution is dilution.

Brim it with fresh unleaded.

Thats what im thinking, but would V-Power not be even better to use than just regular unleaded?

Or would an additive + new fuel be even better? As they are supposed to help clean the system and remove condensation etc...

I just dont want to make the trip to the MOT on 1 cylinder... especially on a 125 as it just doesnt go at all when 1 cylinder cuts out lol.

The bike has been dry stored but i noticed alot of condensation out of the exhaust when i left her running the other day.

If the problem is stale fuel. A tank of normal unleaded will fix it.

If the problem is not stale fuel, v-power will not fix it.

Save your money to spend on a new set of sparkplugs.

Hi

I wouldn't rely on any fuel being better than others. Especially if you might land up leaving it in the tank for a while (higher octane fuels might well degrade more rapidly as things evaporate off).

I would be tempted to drain the fuel, including the carbs (lob it in the car - it will be diluted so much to be a non issue) and put in some fresh fuel and one of the decent additives (the Forte one seems to be well regarded).

Best solution would be to strip the carbs. But I would be tempted with the lazy solution first. Could also be worth just draining the carbs and trying again before going to any other effort.

All the best

Keith

I'd whip the fuel line off, let it filter out and replace with nice clean fuel... about 300ml of it and drain that out to catch the rest, whack a jerry can of fuel in and start up, warm n gun it.

Cheer Keith, thats the response i was hoping for Smile

I will try fresh fuel to begin with and have a look for this Forte stuff.

I want to try the lazy options first as getting to the carbs is a pain on my bike (fully faired) as just getting to the float bowls requires fairing removal, although i might be up-jetting soon anyway (new exhaust system)

Thanks again.

Whatever you do, I would drain the carbs. Only takes a tiny bit of water to settle down in the float bowl to cause a load of problems.

All the best
