Most of the people on pistonheads are sensible, unlike many on this forum.

Pistonheads is one of the most sensible web forums I've ever been on actually... and in a way its pretty boring for it.

If by 'sensible' you mean "love shiny expensive things for the sake of being shiny and expensive, unwilling to consider different points of view", sure Wink.

As discussed previously, generally I limit my posting there because too often "my opinion" seems to be taken as trolling - how could someone actually not care about ride/driving a tatty vehicle?

In fairness, you have been known to take that approach to extremes, though. Not quite as far as Paddy has, but close Laughing

The particular one that really got me was people treating me as a troll because I was suggesting that a car was still just as good if it had a scratch on it - while the impression I received from the PH collective was that it would have lost the majority/a significant amount of it's 'worth' to them as an object they owned.

I might not care for cars as much I do bikes, but I can still appreciate their beauty.

Well, some of them anyway...

G, some people are just superficial bastards.

I ride about on this and I've sent it down the road as you can see from the gouges out the fairing:

https://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a324/david_m213/DSC00457.jpg?t=1317853796

I had thought about getting it resprayed, but when it comes down to it, it's just going to be the same bike so a waste of money for me. I ride for the enjoyment of the riding rather than being a poser on a bike. It's actually more fun to have a bike you're not worried about getting damaged aesthetically.

Clueless people have tried to take the piss out of me "not looking after it". It passed its MOT with no advisories a couple of months ago and the guy was really going to town on it with his inspecting.

I wash it once a year and ride it every day.

Tbh though I kinda don't care when it comes to my own appearance. I'll wear 10 year old t shirts of bands i don't even listen to anymore just because it's a nice old t shirt. I'll sport beans down my shirt and not really care if I've dropped them etc.

Obviously I sort this out when I actually need to care.

Meh, if I don't care but other people do, why should I change for them unless say im looking for a girlfriend or need a job etc and need to be smart for that.

Ugh. This.

On my 125, I didn't mind about getting it down as far as I could because it was already damaged. I scraped the foot pegs on numerous occasions.

On the 500 though, it's all in good condition and not broken... makes me reluctant to push it encase I bin it and damage it. I'm not scared of coming off, I'm scared of ruining those pretty fairings! Laughing

Yeah. Bollocks am I buying new shirts, trainers, etc because there's some new fad.

Same set of shirts do me until they fall apart. They look a bit like this (but much cheaper and no brand name).

https://www.barkers-northallerton.co.uk/menswear-6/casual-shirts-13/gant-oxford-barstripe-mens-shirt-1587-641_zoom.jpg

Not going 'out of style' any time soon. Can't say the same for some Superdry £60 hoodie.

If I had a six figure income, maybe then I'd be superficial. Who knows. For now I'd rather spend the pennies on things that matter.

Though I'm not sure about the beans down top thing. Dirty fucker. Wink

100% Agree with G, Pistonheads is good for SP&L only rest of it these days is shit, very up themselves, very cliquey, very "do as we say".
Examples
Winter tyres, there seems to be the impression that
A. They should be law in the UK when ever it is below 12 degrees.

B. when it is below 12 degrees and you don't have winters you will die, even though we have managed without this winter tyre fad since cars were frist driven over here.

Law breaking, even if something stupid like a bit of pocket fluff falling on the floor out of your pocket when pulling change out you should be banned from driving and put in jail, yet this is the same forum a few years ago who had the "lapping game" on the motorway, where they would lap MLM's

Agreeing with what everyone else says regarding the subject, don't offer a differing opinion.

The need for everyone to fit in, "I need a watch"....."what you need is a massive big fuck off watch for many thousands of pounds, and it must be Breitling, Omega etc and must have jewels and shit in them, or we will frown upon you" ....Also goes for, shirts, ties, suits, shoes, random gadgets, what they recommend is gospel and do not suggest otherwise.

Constant need to use their shitty memees which stopped being funny years and years ago " I am powerfully built with a mohawk, so I threw a can of Red Bull at his 335D (mapped) before delivering VBRJ to his wife" this is even more annoying when new posters come in and are like little school girls "maybe it was a 335d mapped hehehe *school girls laugh <)"

The need to use math symbols when talking about numbers, just fuck off with your " I am looking for something >£5000 and <£10000"....Just fuck off, there is no need for it, I hav between £5000 and £10k to spend.

The one that is really getting on my tits though is Chris Harris and PH need to bandy him about, is there any need to keep pointing out they have a mediocre at best car journalist on board? Tired of stories with "our very own Harris" (so there is more than two?) "Harris does this, Harris goes and fucks a donkey, what does he think about it?" Just fuck off, I don't give a shit who wrote the story, I really don't, 90% of the time it his opinion on shit cars, or telling stories about things he has done, I do not care, just a simple motoring story please, and especially fucking stop it with the third person titles written in the first person, is he uncapable of writing his own titles to his own stories?

I really do give up with the place, the only good bits are SP&L and the little car specific areas, that is it.

12 degrees is excessive, especially when they are only supposed to work at 7 degrees or below. However, it is the law in many European countries, and so perhaps it should be the law. However, Pistonheads is far from decided on the matter, in fact it causes very heated arguments. I've driven on snow and ice in a car with winter tyres, and they are very very good. They would stop a lot of accidents.

Just like this forum then. You get a load of idiots who wouldn't break the 70mph speed limit, and yet there are idiots who approach stationary traffic at the Dartford tunnel at 120mph... Go figure

That happens on this forum often enough. I guess PH is worse, but still.

The forum is full of people with money. To have a fast car you kinda need money, so it makes sense. Biking is much more the people's passtime than driving fast cars is.

And THIS forum DOESN'T do that? Laughing Laughing Laughing

Lots of people do that, I fail to see how it is annoying or impinges on your online experience! Wink

That annoyed me a bit at first, but you have to remember its more like Visordown than BCF. I posted in the "We want to bum Chris Harris" thread, and I said that I felt he was taking something away from the site, in that I like to read about cars when written about by mere mortals who have the same issues you or I have when buying and running a car. Not some sideways nutter who doesn't have to pay for anything. To be fair he's been interesting and thoughtful so far, and has done some reasonably interesting videos. It seems my fears were (pretty much) unfounded.

The site is odd compared to BCF, but BCF is odd compared to all other forums on the 'Net. Pistonheads is popular because it is generally frequented by people that can spell, who are generally reasonably sensible when it comes to driving and safety facism (IE they aren't TOO obsessed with safety, but wouldn't countenance totally prattish driving).

BCF is popular because its generally self moderated and has a wide range of people. It is dominated by younger riders, and some people on this forum have very extreme opinions on things, and it is blighted by keyboard warriorism much more than PH is, but at the end of the day compared to 99% of internet forums, PH has a lot in common with BCF. Which is why they are really the only two forums I regularly read.
