Tbh I would prefer just to buy a new bike around £200.. I get the point about the quality of a better bike for the same price second hand, but I'd rather just get new and not have to worry about a) following up an various second hand ads b) going out to view and c) making sure I get hold of one that hasn't had anything untoward happen to it..

BUT you will in 6 months time need to replace the crank, cassette, be bored of fixing punctures, have changed the tyres after falling off for no apparent reason and probably upgraded the brakes. Oh and the saddle won't fit your sit bones. So total spend of £300 at 6 months and if you don't like it you'd get £100 for it if you were lucky.

If you're that worried you can pm me tedious links to bikes near to you on ebay or whatever and i'll have a look for you. I've doen this for a few BCF members now and they seem happy with their purchases

i don't know how tall you are but a quick rattle on ebay of searching for Marin, max price £200 found this in nottingham

*nerd mode* It has it's original tyres on. So has either had them re fitted (as they're shite) or has had very little use.

Those forks are spring so have long service intervals, i've never had to re true my wheels and my Marin has had some grief. the crank arms look very worn (finish rubbed off) but i know from my bike the finish came off the cranks almost instantly.

Think the most important fact the OP can take from this thread is that £200 will not buy you a half decent brand new bike. Double your budget and it might.

Seriously, if you want new and can stretch to £300, you can get a Specialized Hardrock. The frame is the standout component here and gives a decent start base.

It's probably not quite that bad; but motorbike comparison is buying a new Chinese bike or a second hand Japanese bike.
Everyone knows that while the idea of a "new bike" may save some hassle, the reality is overall it'll probably be more hassle and money. And you'll lose more money in the long run from both devaluation as well as replacing quickly-knackered parts.

doubt it considering I've had this one for around 5 years https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/SHOGUN-CULT-XC-BIKE-GREAT-FUN-BIKE-VGC-SERVICED-GOES-VERY-WELL-/170839914286?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&hash=item27c6da372e Laughing

That Marin looks decent... What would you expect to pay for a decent one second hand? Can't see a size though?
I'm about 6"1 and about 13 stone if that helps lol..
I am in Nottingham though Thumbs Up

*edit* It's 17" which is a bit small isn't it?

You may want a Large, I'm 5ft5 (mostly leg though) and my northside trail is a bit reachy for me from saddle to bar but the saddle goes plenty high enough and further for me.

It was only an example which i'd expect to stay within your budget, however just like with motorbikes, mountain bikes have a 'season' and you're in it's peek price months at the moment.

Anyone know anything about a Scott YZ2? 'project octagon' if that narrows it down at all.. Not sure how old but
it looks exactly like this one

https://www.moredirt.co.uk/ratebike.php?id=1810

New chain, sprockets etc, looks reasonably tidy.

£170 from a bike/repairs shop, any idea how much these are worth/ I should be looking to pay?

Cheers.

Under £100 but depends on what bits it has on it. Assume the frame, if straight is worth £50.

Looks like a jump/4X style frame, is that what you're looking for?

Also, they're chain rings, don't go calling them sprockets in a bicycle shop, you'll get looked at funny Wink
