Whats the rules?

I never bought parking tickets for my bike until I was informed that the council do you if you don't have a ticket in a residential area (between 9am - 6pm) . . .thus tickets required in every paying location.

Was thinking about this the other day, apart from the rules varying where you live. For the councils that demand a ticket (although they are easily stolen) they could incorporate a system (touch pad like the ones including in most doctors now) where you could include your licence plate. Least that way it means less chance of the ticket being stolen.

York council have IIRC 4 types of bike parking in their car parks and streets.

1.
No bike parking in car park. It's on the signs but can be missed as you do not ride/walk past the sign (e.g. the one by Clifford's Tower). You get a fine for parking a bike there. However, have seen bikes parked by the cycle racks on the pavement and not sure if they were penalised (apparently bikes not allowed in cycle racks).

2.
Free bike parking in car parks in allocated bays. These are where you can't get a car, e.g. there's a tree growing there.

3.
Pay and display charge for motorcycles. One car park, Union Street, provide street furniture to lock your bike up to. You pay and IIRC you got 2 tickets so you could prove you paid (they might have changed that).

4.
Free on street parking in resident areas and any on street marked parking areas. This one winds up the locals as I think they have to pay for on street parking permit. Yet biker boy can roll up, park, walk to work or wherever and all for free all day.

Last time I was in Hull (aka Kingston upon Hull) they had free on street motorcycle parking in marked bays with street furniture to lock your bike to. Which was nice (and essential - it was Hull Mad )

Just some info Thumbs Up

I think where you have to pay for parking at a meter, you should have to input your full vehicle reg, that way it is
a) printed on the ticket, to avoid someone else pinching it and using it
b) if ticket is stolen or lost or blown away etc, then traffic warden can access the machine and find out if you paid for one or not.

If that was implemented, I probably wouldn't mind paying (a reduced price) for parking a bike... a lot of parking in sheffield on the roads is like 40p per hour max or something, most is 20p per hour with up to 15 mins free I think, I'm nearly always less than 15 minutes, and never usually parked longer than 2 hours anyway. Wouldn't mind paying 10p per hour for the bike though, but wouldn't want to have to pay as much as a car when I'd take up a lot less space

Last Sept we stopped in York while touring on my xjr. I was a bit wary of just parking the bike on the street as there were so many NO PARKING & PERMIT HOLDERS ONLY signs. So i spotted a female police officer on patrol and thought i,d ask where i could park my bike. She informed me that it was ok to park on the street as long as i bought a ticket and stuck it on the bike, or i could park in the nearest carpark just around the corner. When i went to get said ticket from the machine, there was a display which said NO TICKETS ISSUED BETWEEN 6am-6pm and the machine wouldnt accept any money. We then tried the carpark, i was very surprised to read a sign saying NO PARKING BETWEEN 6am-6pm !!! we then gave up our sightseeing tour and headed on our way. York has to be one of the most vehicle UNFRIENDLY cities i have ever been to.

Pay and display car parks was my main wonder....

I have never seen a sign that says 'motorcycles free'..

Just someone told me it is always free for bikes and that they never buy a ticket - can't remember who that was.

South End On Sea is a money grabbing joke when it comes to residential areas... Your not allowed to park anywhere between certain times and the Walden's are on the case at 9am. The problem is if you work shifts and get back late - no 'safe' spaces and if yo start late you have to get up and move your vehicle.. Pain in the rear.

The streets are really wide too.. it's not like ambulance wold have trouble passing.

Most places take payment via phone. Simply use that method. No ticket to lose Thumbs Up
