Another silly newbie question...

Hey so I've taken the plunge today and despite not having done my CBT yet (booking it for the end of this month) I've gone and bought a bike.

My question is most likely stupid but its worth asking...

Since I only have a provisional UK car licence and I'm not riding the bike do I have to insure it? Its being kept in a garage and again I stress I'm not riding it, I just don't want to waste insurance for a week or two (possibly a month in the worst case scenario) if I'm not using the bike.

If it was me i wouldnt. but then insuring it might protect it from being nicked or something.

not sure if it's a legal requirement that it has to be insured if not in use

Nope, you don't need to have it insured. If it gets stolen you obviously won't be covered though.

You would need to be insured if you kept it on the road.

Does it matter if the bike isn't taxed?

When I do complete my CBT and insure it I don't want to go to tax the bike and get stung for not declaring it SORN or having it taxed whilst not using it.

Also does it make a difference to your insurance quote if you don't have your CBT?

I had my bike without insurance for 3 months while waiting to do my cbt. my brother also did the same, but without tax.

Tax ran out the 31st May 2012

But if it is free to SORN I think I will just do that till I'm sure of when I'm legally going to be able to ride it Smile

I bought my Versys a month before I took my tests. I rang MCE for 'laid up' insurance and explained that it would only be locked in the garage until I got my license and then changed to fully comp. All this was understood by them, and that this was what 'laid up' insurance was for - temporary, short-term theft cover.
I passed my tests, took out fully comp with ebike after the MCE quote was ridiculous, MCE then charged me the full years premiums (£200) when I cancelled the 'laid up' policy. It cost me £200 to insure the locked up bike against theft for 19 whole days. Do NOT go with MCE for anything. They are robbing twats. In the ombudsmans hands now, and I hope that MCE get fucked.

Just checked the DVLA website after trying to get through to someone human on the phone to no avail!

This is what I found...

'When SORN isn't needed
SORN isn’t needed if:
you no longer have the vehicle and DVLA has been informed
you take the vehicle abroad permanently
you apply for a refund of vehicle tax and don’t keep the vehicle
you are keeping the vehicle off the road and untaxed for less than 14 days
your vehicle was last taxed before 31 January 1998'

Just in case there are others out there not sure like me lol

If the bike is taxed, it must be insured, if it isn't taxed then it doesn't.

As for the SORN, My bike was off the road in the back garden in pieces for 11 months with no tax or insurance, I didn't SORN it either and have heard nothing from the DVLA.

It's been taxed and insured and on the road for 2 months now and still nothing, I know I should have SORN'd it but didn't and have had no repercussions, I think for a month or so you'd be fine.

That said, if you are worried about it and about the threat of a fine, then do it, as said before, it takes a few minutes on line and will come off automatically when you tax it.

If the policy for you is only a couple of hundred £ a year or so - I would insure it anyway in case of theft - sods law and all that.

I know its garaged but some scrote may of seen you wheeling it in there and thought he'd want a bit of that.

(Unless its a very cheap bike, then probably not worth claiming for if it did get nicked: increased premiums etc etc)
