Hey guys,

So I've been riddled with problems with my Derbi since I got it back in May last year. Recently, I've had problems that I thought were probably battery related. Bike one day just wouldn't start up, had to get the AA out as I was 20 miles from home.. only needed a jump to get it working, and so I went back home.. and the bike remained in that state, unable to start.

Fortunately, I live in a house with a load of other students, one of which is a mechanic. After having a look, he thought getting a fresh spark plug could do the trick (starter motor was fine.. old spark plug was in need of replacing anyway). Unfortunately this didn't work, and so he had a look at my coil pack.. took it up to the garage where he works to have a proper look, and he told me that it was "well and truly f***ed".

From the symptoms of my bike and him saying that, it does seem like that could fix the issues I've had.

Question now though is, where do I get one from? Are they practically the same on all bikes, so I could just pick up any random one?

After searching eBay, I've found Derbi coil packs, but nothing specifically for the Senda Cross City 125. Will any Derbi one be ok?

Any advice is appreciated guys Smile

Thanks,
Liam

If it would jump start fine I can't see how the problem is coil related.

How is the coil 'fucked' does it still jump start? If it jump starts fine you need a new battery or maybe a reg/rec. If it jumpstarts Start it and put a multimeter across the battery if it reads between 13-14.5 volts whilest running and the volts raise with the revs you need a new battery if not you need a new reg/rec and maybe a new battery.

Did he call it that? It's a single cylinder, it's not a "pack". If so, I'd treat his advice as suspect. What did he say about the HT lead and the plug cap?

Very likely, but how would we know for sure? You're looking for someone who's tried exactly the same model of coil on exactly the same model of bike as you've got.

Take a gamble, get it running, sell it. Sell it now. There are far too many "HALP! DERBI!" threads in here.

Could the mechanic who suggested the "coil pack" be referring to the bottom coils which are located on the end of the crankshaft which generate a low voltage signal for the second H.T coil which generates the spark, if this is the case you will need one of these.

It did jump fine.. won't jump any more :/. It'll crank a teeny bit, but won't be able to hold revs itself. Sorry should have stated this earlier.

Already got a new battery.. it's only 3 or 4 weeks old.. the one before is only about 9 months old, but has been sat for a good few months. Presumably the battery was never an issue, but seemed like it, hence the new batteries.

Yes, he did refer to it as a "coil pack", but also said I'll need a new HT lead.. no idea about plug cap.

Yeah Rogerborg, that's the idea.. get it fixed.. once it's working book Mod1 and Mod2 ASAP.. as soon as I've passed, selling on.. regardless of whether or not I'll have a bigger bike straight away.. just cannot be dealing with this lump of crap anymore :/. Lovely to ride when it's working D:.

liam did he do the basic check of taking the plug out fitting the plug cap to it, holding it against the block and trying to start it to check for spark? the way he's gone about it is completely wrong unless you've forgotton to give us all the info of what he's done. if i rememeber rightly your somewhere near derby aren't you?
