Whilst I was out last night, I rode down a road with speed humps, but the individual ones where you can ride either side to avoid them...and I wondered, as they are so 'pronounced / high' do you have to go over them when doing your Mod2 or can you go round them? Sorry if this is a stupid question :/

You can go right around them. If no cars are oncoming, do a life saver and move to the middle of the road and go through the centre of them all, no need to move back unless a car is coming the other way or to avoid any hazards etc. That's what I was told, and what I did in my Mod 2 and was fine Smile

Hope this helps

*Edit* Thought I'd also mention, watch your speed though, don't go zooming through them Razz

Around blind(ish) corners, or corners with reduced visibility, I usually go around towards the kerb-side. The same as I do if a car is coming.

I've not tried that on the test though because I didn't see any of them on my test.

It's actually a very good question.

My view on it is: in real life, ride around them any way you want.

On test though, it may be safer to slow down and ride over them. The examiner may moan about it afterwards, but there's probably less to go wrong - and fail on - than with manoeuvring around them.

It's a judgement call though, if the road is clear and you're well up on your mirror checks, down the middle of the road should be fine, but bear in mind that all advice is subject to the whims of the particular DSA examiner on the day - they're essentially a law unto themselves.

Rode over them on my first mod 2, and the examiner said I should hae just gone around them.

If it's your first mod 2, then I would just go over them to be on the safe side.

Just use normal judgement; try to go around them if possible, choose the side that is least dangerous ie: if there's a parked car 10 feet past the bump that would make you swerve quite harshly then go to the right of it instead, similarly if it's a bend or there's a car coming then take the inside. If there's a car coming and a parked car just slow right down, let the car through then ride over the top of it.

They only want you to be safe and use common sense, there's no point trying to reason your way around the examiners mind, just ride the bike.

Going around them would be best. If there is a car coming then either go on the kerb side or over them.
I doubt they would fail you for going over them if you wanted too, it just might make you look bad.

Problem is going over them looks messy, it's harsh and bumpy so it doesn't look like a nice smooth ride from behind - and half the battle of MOD2 is fooling the examiners subconscious that you're in full control of the bike just by making everything look smooth and effortless!! Very Happy

Did he mark you down for it though?

Although it's a fair point that you might have got an "attitude fail" for it that saw you getting marked down elsewhere. Thinking

Nope, didn't get a minor for it.

Although he did give me a minor on my second mod 2, for deciding not to turn right at a set of traffic lights after a guy on a bike waved me across. Confused
Thought I wouldn't chance it, but a minor for that? Bit petty tbh.
Other than that, I had no complaints with the other faults he marked me on during my three mod 2's.

When i done my mod 2 i specifically asked this as was told:

If the road is clear go through the middle, don't go kirb-side as it adds unnecessary risk. Make sure if your going around them slow down to the speed that you would have slowed down to to go over them.

If the road isn't clear go over them.

If in doubt go over them.

Thumbs Up

Pretty sure part of the theory has questions like if your pillion says its safe to go or if a pedestrian waves you across to ignore them and check yourself, so odd he'd give you a minor for not following the bikes signal, but then again, maybe you were sat there slightly too long and it looked hesitant and the guy on a bike was giving you a "Go on then turn ffs" type wave Wink

I find going over them is easiest stood on the pegs with loose arms, handles the impact better, probably wouldnt be happy about doing that in the test though Laughing
