|
|
Dear All,
Just pass my CBT training and I want to buy a used 125cc motorcycle, It is have to be MOT'd and possibly Taxed. Can You pls explain me how does all process look like.
Lets say I won the bike on ebay and I want to collect the bike and ride it back home (don't have a car and a trailer).
- If it is Taxed, do I have to change it to my name?
- what about the insurance? Should I ask for a reg. number and insure it before or wait till I see bike and insure it over the phone if I decide to take it? Insurance quote is important for me and it is major factor for me when choosing a bike as I just pass my driving test and got a full car licence, so I don't have any 'No claim discount'.
Basically what do I need to ride the bike home and is there anything else I have to do like inform DVLA that I purchase the bike?
-How does the buying process look like itself? What documents I need and what should I expect from the seller?
Thank You very much for Your help

Not technically true, the policy isn't valid until the certificate of insurance has been "delivered" (RTA 1988 174 (1)), but if you can find a copper who both knows and cares about that before the heat death of the universe, I'll eat my (spare) lid.
If you do it beforehand, ideally download and print off a certificate of insurance. If you do it on the spot, be sure to take a note of the policy number in case you are tugged by the fuzz.
The old owner might assure you that he won't cancel his policy until you get home. I'd likely tell you that too, then cancel it the moment you're round the corner.
Be clear that it's the current keeper's responsibility to send off the V5C - it's a liability, not an asset. However, hang onto their details and if you haven't received it within 4 weeks or so, chase up the DVLA to get a copy. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.

Ballcocks, I'd forgot they only gone and done something sensible. It seems so... unlikely. ____________________ Biking is 1/20th as dangerous as horse riding.
