Many years ago (well, about 16-17) i used to cycle a lot. I was and still am lucky enough to have the Malvern Hills on my doorstep.
Of all the great rides i had ( ) one of my most memorable was spending about a week riding from Weymouth to Reading, along the Chalke Way.
Just lately i've been hankering to do a bit of 'adventure tour cycling' - i'm sure a name already exists for it.
So - Does anyone here tour by bicycle? Any hints on what sort of bike works best, the best gear to use?
Are there any decent forums out there dedicated to it? I guess i'm thinking something along the lines of a pedal powered ADVRider.

Basically you'll be wanting a bike with rack mounting points on it, preferably steel framed and with a triple chain set.
I don't know any specific touring forums, but there are a friendly bunch over at www.cyclechat.net

I have thought about doing something similar but one of the problems is the amount of time you would need to cover a decent distance.
My friend did LE>JOG and was averaging 100 miles per day after quite a bit of training. When I've toured on a motorbike around Europe my daily mileage average is 3 X as much in shorter day.
The other problem I was thinking about is how exact your route would need to be and how well planned your accommodation would need to be. Riding another 30-40 miles on a motorbike to find a campsite at the end of a day is nothing on a motorbike but is going to be a killer on a bicycle.
A guy on pistonheads has started a bicycle tour around the world but the thread isn't really updated very often.

I think a guy on this forum did some bicycle touring around France a few years ago and made a post about it but I can't remember who it was now. ____________________ Yamaha FZR400RR 3tj
