I bought these indicator relays for my bike and they got very hot for just being on for between 30 to 60 seconds.

They are the type which fit between the indicator and the wire which connects to the wiring loom

I find this worrying as sometimes you can be sat in traffic lights for more than 1 minute and with the way these got so hot it left me very conerned!

I have emailed the seller stating that I dont wish to send them back or leave negative feedback as I cant be arsed as they only cost me £6.50
The seller has offered to take them back and offer a full refund but at £6.50 I CBA!

So are these things meant to get hot?

Err...

Just use them when you

a - see the other traffic stopping due to lights changing or

b - indicate to signal lane change, filter to front and don't bother indicating/sit in traffic and indicate when you start moving.

Most relays will get warm when used, if your indicators are functioning ok ie. the relay isn't chattering, then all sounds quite normal.

Note warm should mean you can touch it without burning yourself and not glowing red hot.

Can you keep your hand on yours?

no they get so hot that I was beginning to understand the meaning of FIRE in Third Party Fire and Theft level of insurance cover, and this was from just testing them out before road use.

They aren't relays you are describing they are resistors and a complete waste of time IMO.

The reason LED bulbs flash flasher is because they draw less power which is good! However they flash faster as a result. You have but resistors in each circuit which resists the current to so down the flash. Essentially you are just making the indicators draw more power to flash at a better rate.

It would have been better to change the flasher relay for a better one that works based on time not on the draw for power.

A quick Ebay finds this.

For an extra few quid you could have a solution that plugs in, would have taken minutes to fit and you wouldn't have had to hack up your loom.

The one I linked was literally the first one I found it wasn't an endorsement!

Put incandescent bulbs back in, clamp your hand directly over a bulb, turn them on and see how long it takes to say "Ouch".

You've just moved that heat to the resistors.

Timer based relay FTW. Thumbs Up
